“I’ll survive.”

“And I’m gonna have to ride along, because otherwise, she’ll tell you all sorts of ridiculous lies about me,” Remy added, starting to feel a little bold and giving Jed what he hoped was a flirty smile. God, he loved the way Jed still looked so surprised when Remy teased him.

“Nope. You rest. I have a feeling I want to hear those lies.” Jed gave him a smile back, an actual full smile with both sides of his mouth turned up, and it was all Remy could do not to walk over and kiss him again.

Damn it, now Remy wished Lily’s visit was any weekend but this one. But Jed needed to leave for the airport in a few minutes, and Remy knew that he should really talk to Jed about what happened instead of flinging himself into Jed’s arms and hoping for the best. They didn’t have time for that, so he would have to wait.

When Jed was out the door fifteen minutes later and Remy had settled himself on the couch with more ice packs, he realized he’d made a terrible mistake. He should have insisted on riding with Jed so they could talk on the way there and not have to wait all weekend until Lily was gone.

And perhaps as importantly, he should have gone to make sure Lily didn’t say anything that would give Jed the wrong idea, like about how he’d religiously watched all of Jed’s games once he committed to UVM, for example. Or warn Jed off or say something too revealing that would make Jed think Remy had been pining after him this whole time. Which he hadn’t. At least not the whole time. He’d wanted, maybe even lusted, but he hadn’t been pining. There was an important difference.

He made himself wait half an hour, scrolling through his messages and checking up on what Petey and Jake were planning for their break, before he texted Lily.

Remy let his head thunk back against the couch. This was exactly what he was afraid of. Lily greatly overestimated her ability to be subtle. She’d give him away in no time.
