I shake my head. “I just want to go home, Dalton.”
“I can’t tell you how much I love hearing you say that,” he says, a grin spreading across his face and I huff out a laugh.
“Yeah, well, I’m still annoyed that my surprise was ruined.”
He shakes his head. “Tell me again how that was supposed to go down.”
“I was going to move my stuff over and hide it.” A smile creeps across my face as I remember the plan Morgan and I came up with that morning. “Then, I was just going to start putting my stuff around the house and see how long it took you to notice.”
There is a gleam in his eyes as he narrows them at me. “All while I was losing my mind trying to convince you to say yes?”
“Yes,” I say, my cheeks aching as my smile grows.
Fuck.
I really can’t smile like that right now.
“That was the genius of it.”
He sighs and flops to his back. “Just plain mean. That’s what you are.”
“You like it,” I whisper, turning to look at him. He smiles up at the ceiling.
“Prove it.”
A knock at the door interrupts our conversation and we both glance over at the door as it opens.
“Max,” Dalton says, sitting up a little straighter. His body tenses next to mine. That unease moves through me at the same time and my gaze locks onto the folder in Max’s hands. “You have something for us?”
Max nods, walking into the room and sitting in the chair next to the bed. “I do.”
“What did you find?”
Max barks out a laugh. “Oh, a lot.”
He pulls a photograph out of the folder and sets it down on the hospital table before sliding it over to us. Dalton reaches forward and grabs it.
Owen.
It’s a mugshot.
There are bruises along his jaw that are fading slightly. His eyes are bloodshot and it looks like he hasn’t slept in days.
“He was arrested?” I ask and Max nods.
“Drugging you. Renting the car that tried to run y’all off the road. He owned both.” He runs a hand through his hair before shaking his head. I cock my head to the side.
“He admitted it?”
He nods. “Yeah. He signed a plea deal in exchange for information about the man he rented the car for. Eighteen months.”
“You mean Derek,” Dalton scoffs and Max nods.
“I did show Owen a line up and he identified Derek as Josh, the guy he met at the bar and later rented the car for.”
I stare at Owen, at a face that was once so familiar to me and wait for the reaction to come.
Anger.
