Satisfaction.

Anything.

But I don’t feel a thing.

“What did he tell you?” I whisper, glancing up. Both men turn to look at me and I point to the photo. “What did Owen tell you?”

I certainly don’t have any love left for the man but it’s still hard to wrap my mind around the idea that he was involved in a scheme this elaborate against Dalton and I.

Again, why go to all this trouble?

“Lennon, after you left, Owen started going out to a bar to drink his sorrows away pretty much every single night.”

Dalton scoffs. “Pathetic.”

“He said he met this guy there,” Max continues, flashing Dalton a look full of annoyance. “They started talking and this guy tells him that he also just had his heart broken—”

“Bullshit,” Dalton cuts in and Max sighs.

“What part exactly do you think is bullshit, Rooster?”

Dalton’s hand finds mine and he laces our fingers together. “He wasn’t fucking heartbroken about Lennon.”

“Well,” Max says, looking over at the mugshot on my lap. “You may be right about that. I honestly don’t give a shit about his mental state.”

“Good.”

Max rolls his eyes. “Are you going to shut up and listen to the fucking story now?”

Dalton nods to Max to continue.

“Anyway, this man was telling him all about the Devils and how one of y’all had taken his girl from him. He told him what bad guys you were.”

“And Owen believed him?” Dalton asks, his thumb brushing over the back of my hand.

“Not at first but then he stopped by the bakery and saw you there with Lennon.”

Oh.

My eyes widen.

That was the day Owen showed up and tried to force me to talk to him.

The day Dalton defended me.

“He made the connection from that?” I ask and Max nods, his lips pressed into a thin line.

“Yeah.” He sighs. “He said the next time he ran into that guy, he told him about Dalton.”

Dalton’s body is practically vibrating with tension beside me and I reach out, laying my hand on his stomach. He sucks in a breath and lays his hand on top of mine before slowly releasing it.

Max glances over at me. “So, after Owen revealed to this guy that Dalton had ‘taken you’ from him—”

Dalton growls and Max spares him a glance before returning his focus to me.

“This guy started telling him all about the Devils. How they break up relationships for sport, how they target people and track them. How they hurt people.”

Dalton goes still next to me. “He told Owen we track people?”
