Almost is Never Enough

“I’m good.”

“Len.” He sighs. “You didn’t even eat a quarter of this thing.”

I shake my head, turning back to the TV on the wall. “I’m not that hungry.”

He groans. “Woman, you’re going to be the death of me.”

“Right back at ya, handsome,” I tell him, arching a brow as my gaze flicks toward him. “Crashing your motorcycle and shit.”

“Is this a hunger strike cause I crashed my bike?” His eyes are wide as he stares at me, waiting for an answer. I let out a laugh and shake my head.

“No. I’m just not hungry.”

I’ve had a hell of a lot on my mind.

Between that and being cooped up in this hospital for days, I just don’t have an appetite.

So, sue me.

“Sweetheart, you need to eat to help you heal.”

I gesture to the few bites I took out of the sandwich. “Look. I ate some.”

“Not nearly enough,” he growls, giving up and tossing the sandwich back to the plate. He settles into the bed next to me and pulls me a little closer. “I’m gonna spank your ass when we’re both better.”

Before I can say anything, the door opens and the nurse walks in with a cheery smile on her face. It falls when she sees my uneaten sandwich.

“Do you want something else, sweetie?”

I shake my head. “No. Just not hungry.”

“Okay.” Her lips press into a thin line as she takes the tray off the table. “Well, you let me know if you do get hungry and I can probably rustle up something else for you to eat, okay?”

I nod, offering her a smile. “Thank you.”

All of the nurses and doctors here have been really great but I’m tired of being in this damn hospital.

I want to go home.

I want to lay in my own bed and I damn sure don’t want to eat the stuff this place considers edible.

She nods and takes the tray out of my room before ducking back in and checking my vitals quickly.

“How is the pain, hon?”

I give her a tiny shrug. “Bearable.”

“Don’t try to tough it out,” she says, her face stern as she jots something down on a sheet of paper in her hand. “You’ve been through a lot and you have pain medication for a reason.”

I nod. “I won’t. I promise.”

With a hum, she checks my IV site and the bag of fluids hanging above me before she heads toward the door.

“Call me if you need anything.”

As soon as she steps out and closes the door behind her, I let out a breath and relax back into the thin mattress. Dalton turns on his side and reaches up, cradling my cheek.

“What’s up, baby?”
