“You’re bossy,” I say, wrapping my lips around the straw and taking another sip as I continue to sort through the events of…
Yesterday?
When I’ve had enough, I push the cup away and he huffs in annoyance before taking it away.
“I called Morgan.” I smile, despite the pain in my face, as I glance up at Dalton. “She’s moving here.”
He forces a smile but it doesn’t reach his eyes. “That’s great, baby. What else?”
“Uh…” I sigh, my mind sorting through the memories, before letting out a gasp.
Oh.
I remember.
“I went to the apartment,” I tell him, reaching out for his hand. “I was going to surprise you.”
He nods.
“What happened when you got to the apartment, Len?” Jumper asks and I frown.
What did happen when I got to the apartment?
Before I can answer him, several people walk into the room. The man in front is older, in his forties, if I had to guess, with dark hair neatly combed to the side and a white lab coat over his button up shirt and slacks. Behind him is Storm and another man that I’ve never seen before.
“Miss Scott,” the doctor says, stepping up to my bedside as jumper moves out of his way. “How are we feeling?”
“Not great,” I reply, the pain in my body making itself known with every breath and movement. He nods, grabbing something from the side of my bed.
“That’s to be expected. If it gets to be too much, you can push this button for some more meds. But I do need to know if the pain suddenly gets worse.”
I nod, taking the button from him and setting it down on the bed next to my leg.
He grabs a small pen light from his pocket and tests it before leaning over me. “I apologize in advance for this.”
I don’t even get a chance to respond before he pulls my eyelids up and shines the light first in one eye and then the other. I hiss in response as tears flood my vision.
“Motherfucker,” Dalton hisses.
“Mr. Kelley, as I told you before, I’m just doing my job and I will have you removed from this hospital if you don’t get it together,” the doctor says as he pulls away from me and shoves the light back in his pocket. I glance over at Dalton, who is being held back by Storm. He’s practically snarling at the doctor and I hold my hand out for him to take. Storm releases him and he gently takes my hand in both of his as his shoulders droop.
“Can you tell me your full name?” the doctor asks, his gaze firmly on me. I nod.
“Lennon Gwendolyn Scott.”
He nods. “And your date of birth?”
“January eighteenth, nineteen ninety-nine.”
Taking my hand, he lifts it up and looks at the plastic bracelet around my wrist before he nods.
“Can you tell me where you are?”
I nod. “Hospital.”
“Good,” he answers before pointing to Dalton. “Can you tell me who this man is?”
My eyes meet Dalton’s. “Dalton Kelley. My boyfriend.”
