But what if I never get that moment now?
What if she leaves me and never gets to know that she’s taking me with her?
“I should have told you last night,” I force out, shaking my head against our hands. “I should have said it as soon as I knew but I love you, baby.”
My voice breaks.
Pain shoots through me.
“I fucking love you so goddamn much.” A sound I’ve never made before rips itself from my body as I pull my head back to look up at her face again, tears pouring down my face. “I love you so you can’t leave me, Len. You’re my home. Not the house. Not the club. You.”
Her breathing is steady.
The beeping continues on like my world isn’t shattering around me.
“Please just wake up.” I press my lips to her hand. “Please, baby. I won’t survive losing you. I just won’t.”
She doesn’t respond.
Of course she doesn’t.
I press my head to our hands again and close my eyes.
There is nothing left to do but wait.
Even if it kills me.

Pain.
It’s the first thing that slices through the darkness.
My body is bellowing at me.
So intense that I can’t pinpoint a single spot that is causing the agony. It feels like it’s coming from everywhere, all at once. My head is throbbing in a steady beat and my face feels swollen and tight.
Ow.
The ache in my stomach is less intense but constant. I suck in a breath and a sharper pain pierces through my side.
Fuck.
Murmurs of voices fade in and out of my mind, sometimes fuzzy and far away. Other times becoming clearer but not clear enough for me to make out or understand. There is a faint beeping sound that sounds vaguely familiar but I can’t identify that either.
Shit.
What is happening to me?
“Man, it’s been almost twenty-four hours and you haven’t left her side once,” a voice says, much clearer than before but I don’t recognize it. “You need to eat. You need to sleep and god fucking knows you need to shower.”
“Fuck off. I’m not leaving her,” a voice growls and I pull in a breath, my side screaming from the move.
Dalton.
I’d recognize that voice anywhere.
