“You saw her,” I growl, turning to him and getting in his face but he stands firm as he nods again. They all saw how badly she was hurt so how can he stand here and tell me that she’s going to be okay?

“I did. And yeah, it was bad. But I’m telling you, she’s strong. She’s going to pull through.”

Letting out a huff, I turn away from him and glance over at the emergency room door again.

Nothing.

“This has to be Owen,” I snap, glancing back at him and he makes a face.

“Listen, Owen is a problem for sure.” He sucks in a breath and shakes his head. “But I don’t think he’d be capable of doing this right now. Not after what you did to him.”

“He followed her.”

He nods. “He did.”

“He drugged her,” I growl and he nods again.

“Yes.”

My hands ball into fists again. “He ran us off the fucking road.”

“We don’t know that, for sure.”

“I do,” I snap, straightening my shoulders as I meet his eyes. “After this, I know it was him.”

He shakes his head and releases a breath. “No, man. You don’t know. Let’s not jump to conclusions without evidence.”

“Who else, then?”

He opens his mouth to say something before snapping it shut again and shaking his head.

Exactly.

There is no one else with motive to do this to my girl.

“Mr. Kelley?”

My head snaps in the direction of the emergency room door. An older man in a white lab coat stands there with a folder in his hand.

“Lennon?”

He nods. “Let me start off by saying that she is stable but her condition is critical.”

“What does that mean?” I ask, my heart hammering as I run a hand through my hair.

“Her nose was broken, as well as three of her ribs. One of which nicked her lung which caused a small pneumothorax. We’re continuing to monitor that but her breathing is stable and we don’t anticipate needing to intervene unless it gets worse.”

“Pneumothorax?” I ask, my head spinning as I picture Lennon the way I found her in the apartment, lying on the floor on her belly.

“A collapsed lung.”

Fuck.

“There was a penetrating wound in her side,” he continues, not even giving me a fucking moment to process any of this. “But it wasn’t too deep and it didn’t hit anything vital. She also has extensive bruising and soft tissue damage.”

He shakes his head and looks down at the file in his hand.

“Based on the wound pattern and the shard of wood in her side, I would guess that she was beaten with a wooden baseball bat.”
