All the air rushes out of me like a punch to the gut.
A baseball bat?
A fucking baseball bat?
I picture my girl, my perfect girl being beaten with a goddamn baseball bat and my stomach lurches as the room spins.
I stumble back and a hand presses against my shoulders, holding me up.
“My biggest concern at the moment is the head injury. She has a small bleed in her brain-”
“What?” I hiss, blinking at him. “Her fucking brain is bleeding?”
I want to scream.
I want to tear the walls of this hospital down with my bare hands.
His lips press into a thin line and he nods. “Yes, sir. It’s a minor bleed and right now she’s stable. But we will need to monitor it closely overnight and repeat her scans. She is not out of the woods yet.”
“Is she awake?”
He shakes his head. “She has not regained consciousness.”
“When will she?” I ask, taking a step toward him. He lets out a sigh.
“I can’t say right now. Sometimes the brain needs time. We will know more when we see how she responds over the next several hours.”
What he’s not saying is screaming in my head.
She might not ever wake up.
Pain floods my chest.
No.
That can’t happen.
“I need to see her.”
He nods. “She’s being moved up to a room right now. I’ll have a nurse come take you up there.”
I nod, turning away from him as I begin pacing again, my mind spinning with all the medical jargon he just threw at me.
Her lung collapsed.
Her brain is bleeding.
Her nose is broken.
“Fuck,” I hiss, shoving both hands through my hair. The urge to hit something is so fucking strong I might just put my fist through the goddamn wall.
“Rooster,” Storm says, pulling my attention to him. “Why don’t you head home-”
“Absolutely fucking not,” I snap, cutting him off and he sighs as he looks down at my body.
“You are covered in her blood, man.”
I glance down at my t-shirt - the black one Lennon insisted I change into this morning. It’s dark enough that you can’t see any blood on it but my jeans have splotches of her blood all over them. Meeting his gaze, I shake my head.
