Jumper scoffs. “Because it’s a big fucking jump from stalking to attempted murder.”

“So we think it was Owen, then?”

I shake my head. “I don’t know. But I also can’t think of anyone else who would have the motivation to hurt her like that. Maybe he wasn’t thinking clearly and now that he is, he realized he fucked up.”

“He did say he was standing outside her apartment to apologize and make sure she was okay,” Jumper adds, looking less than convinced. “Same thing with the street fair.”

“Did he seem genuinely remorseful?” Smith asks and Jumper laughs.

“Hard to know for sure after what Rooster did to his fucking face.”

I shoot him a look.

He holds his hands up in surrender.

“Do we think he’s done then?” Storm asks, looking at me and I shrug.

I honestly don’t know.

I would have thought he’d be done after I knocked his ass out at the street fair.

Fuck.

Maybe I should have followed through on that threat.

“If he’s not, then he has a fucking death wish.”

Storm shoots Jumper a look. “And how many other assholes think they can find a way to take one of us on and get away with it? Especially when they believe they own a woman we’re protecting?”

“I hear what you’re saying, Prez,” Jumper adds. “But you saw Roost when we got back and he had calmed down a teeny tiny bit at that point.”

Storm sighs and nods. “Fine. But we’re getting off topic here.”

“Let’s go back to the money,” Moose says, meeting my gaze across the table. “Would he have reason to want or need a thousand dollars?”

I bark out a laugh. “Considering that the fucker doesn’t have a job and was relying solely on Lennon, yeah. He definitely needs it.”

“So, then it’s plausible that he really did rent the car for someone else?”

“Sure,” I say with a nod. “But why would that person then try to run Lennon and I off the road.”

“There is definitely a piece we’re not seeing here, yet,” Storm adds with a sigh. He looks across the table at Streak. “Can you dig into the bar he was frequenting? And see if they have security cameras you can hack?”

Streak grins, glancing up from his computer. “Oh, yes I can.”

“Okay, until we have that information, I don’t think there is much else we can do now.”

We all nod in agreement.

I don’t love that answer but I know he’s right.

We don’t have anything solid yet and as much as I might believe Owen is behind trying to run Lennon and I off the road, I don’t know for sure.

And I need to know for sure.

“One more thing,” Storm says as he picks up the gavel. “I got a text from Raya’s burner this morning. She and Joey made it safely to their next stop and she wanted me to pass that along to y’all.”

A wave of relief washes through me.
