“I-I didn’t…” he gasps, still trying to crawl backwards away from me as I continue advancing on him. Jumper and Gear make it inside the apartment, shutting the door behind them. His eyes dart to them before returning to me.
Good move.
They’re here for his protection.
Not mine.
“Answer my question, fucker.”
He hits the side of the recliner, unable to back up further. “Wh-what question?”
“Why did you try to run Lennon and I off the goddamn road?” My voice is calm, too fucking calm. Hyde is itching beneath my skin, ready to end this fucker but I need these goddamn answers first.
He shakes his head. “I d-didn’t. I swear.”
“Let me tell you what I fucking know, Owen,” I say, crouching down in front of him and meeting his bleary eyes. “I know you rented a car. I know that car then tried to run me and my girl off the fucking road. What I don’t know is why but you’re going to tell me the why. No matter how long that takes.”
He shakes his head again, holding his hands up in front of him. “I rented a car for a friend.”
“What?” I snap, the air around me unnaturally still as I get another piece to this fucking puzzle. “Who?”
“His name is Josh.”
I narrow my eyes. “Josh?”
“I d-don’t know his last name.” He shakes his head again. “We met at the bar and started talking. He said he needed my help so I helped him.”
“And why the fuck would you do that?”
He sighs. “When Lennon left… she was making all the money and I… was running out-”
“How much?” I ask, cutting him off and he blinks up at me. “How much did he fucking pay you to rent the goddamn car?”
“A grand and he paid the bill for the car.”
Motherfucker.
I stand up and release a breath, running a hand through my hair.
“You’re fucking pathetic.”
His brows draw together as he levels a glare at me. He tries to stand, stumbling over his own feet before he finally rights himself and looks at me.
“You think I don’t fucking know that? You think that’s not blindingly clear to me now that I’ve lost everything?”
I can’t find a shred of sympathy for this asshole.
And I’m not really inclined to try.
“This is why you’ve been standing outside her apartment and showing up at her job?”
He shudders and releases a breath, grabbing a can of beer from the side table and chugging the rest of it. I watch him, disgust flooding my body as he lets out a burp and tosses the can to the floor.
“I just wanted to talk to her,” he finally says, his gaze on the floor in front of him. “Just wanted to make sure she’s okay.”
Every muscle in my body tenses.
No.
