Almost is Never Enough

He’s pacing.

Is he as nervous about this conversation as I am?

Fuck.

He pounds on the door again. “Lennon, baby, I know you’re here.”

“Go away,” I whisper, turning to stare at the ceiling again as I let my arms flop to the floor next to me. I just want to stay here for the next few days, until I can work up the strength to face him and get answers. His face pops into my mind. That smug fucking grin that I love so much and his gorgeous blue eyes that light up when he looks at me. I squeeze my eyes closed again like I can somehow banish him. The tears won’t stop but I’m too exhausted to sob anymore.

“Lennon,” he yells, pounding on the door. “Baby, if you don’t open this door, I swear to God, I will break it down.”

No need.

Calvin keeps an extra key in the little lockbox on the wall next to the door.

But I’m sure he knows that.

Whatever.

I don’t care anymore.

Everything just feels… empty.

“Please, baby,” he says, softer this time, and the ache in my chest intensifies.

Fuck.

“Please just talk to me. What happened?”

I let out a sardonic laugh.

What happened?

Only my world imploding.

No big deal.

“Lennon,” he yells again and his fist hits the door once before the landing begins squeaking again. He’s not leaving though.

I know that.

It’s not his style.

Dalton faces things head on.

But what the fuck am I going to say to him?

Oh, hey, your ex found me at the fight and told me how you like to love ‘em and leave ‘em?

Yeah.

Fucking.

Right.
