And two, the way he kisses me like it’s the first time he’s taken a full breath all day.
These are the thoughts that hurts the worst because I can understand this being a game to him. Or him just not feeling the same way as I do but how could he look at me like that and kiss me in that way then walk away?
Another sob wracks my body and I throw my arm over my eyes as I shake my head.
God, this fucking hurts.
Because it won’t be long before you’re me, watching him make out with the next girl in the crowd and remembering what it was like to be in her position.
I can’t.
If I have to watch Dalton kiss another woman the way he kisses me…
If I have to see him look at her like she brought light into his life for the first time…
No.
No.
No.
My stomach wretches violently and my body shakes as I imagine that.
It’s so fucking cruel.
And seeing that, it would kill a piece of my soul.
The roar of a motorcycle breaks through my aching sobs and I suck in a breath and open my eyes as I turn to look at the window that faces the alley.
No.
I’m not ready for this.
My heart jumps into my throat. This conversation can go one of two ways and I can’t face either of them right now.
I’m not ready.
The engine cuts off and I watch the window as the tears continue to fall but I don’t get up.
My heart is screaming for him, begging him to hold me and tell me that woman is lying. But, my mind is yelling for him to leave, go away, until I can make more sense of this whole damn thing. Until I can get control of my emotions and prepare myself for the inevitable heartbreak I’m going to face.
I can’t face him right now.
I don’t what I’ll say to him.
I don’t know what to believe.
And the very last thing I want is for him to lie to me.
But, God… my poor, battered heart wants desperately to believe whatever explanation he has for all of this.
A shadow races past the window.
He’s here.
My heart is pounding in my ears but I still don’t move.
He pounds on the door, his fist slamming into the wood three times in quick succession and my breathing stutters. The metal of the landing squeaks as he moves across it.
