Almost is Never Enough

“Go ahead and park there.” He lets out a laugh. “You’re here with Hyde and no one will say shit to you.”

Shaking my head, I pull into the spot. I saw a glimpse of just how revered Dalton, or Hyde, is at these fights on the night Dalton brought me here but it’s still hard to wrap my head around. The fact that I can just park wherever the hell I want because I’m with Hyde and no one would dare say anything to me about it is fucking bizarre.

He’s a legend here.

A king.

But Dalton doesn’t act like that.

He doesn’t walk around here like he owns this place and I can’t help but be intrigued by that dichotomy.

As I put the Jeep in park, I spot Dalton behind the ring, talking to Gear. He’s bouncing from one foot to the other, flexing and releasing his fists and shaking his arms out.

Then, he glances in my direction.

And stills, his shoulder drooping slightly

Without a word to his friend, he turns and closes the distance between us. He reaches me as I’m climbing out of the Jeep and he pulls me into his body, cupping my face with his taped hands.

“You okay?”

I smile, resisting the urge to roll my eyes. “I’m fine, baby.”

“You sure?” he asks, scanning my face and then I do roll my eyes. God, he’s ridiculous sometimes. His intensity has been turned up to eleven ever since Owen found me at the street fair last night and I know he’s worried but it’s over the top. He lectured poor Jumper for twenty minutes about not letting me out of his sight or he’d beat his face in.

And of course, Jumper just had to egg him on when he’s already on edge.

“I’m sure,” I say, leaning up for a quick kiss but when our lips meet, he takes over and deepens it. One hand leaves my face to wrap around my waist and pull me closer as he kisses me like he needs it to function. His tongue strokes and tangles with mine and I whimper as he molds my body to his. My fingers thread through the hair at the top of his neck and his hand finds my ass.

The crowd roars and he pulls back just enough to press his forehead to mine.

“Fuck,” he whispers and I fight back a smile. “I missed you

“You saw me an hour ago, Dalton.”

He jerks back and meets my eyes. “And?”

“And nothing,” I say, losing the battle against my grin. I won’t admit it to him but I missed him, too. We’ve pretty much been glued at the hip ever since that night at Voodoo, so it was weird to be away from him. He nods.

“That’s what I thought.” Leaning down, he gives me another quick kiss before looking over his shoulder at the ring. “My first fight is up next. Y’all can go over to the other side of the ring to watch.”

I nod, butterflies filling my belly. I can’t wait to see him in his element. “Okay.”

“And you,” Dalton says, turning to Jumper. “Do not leave her side.”

Jumper puts his hand behind his ear like he couldn’t quite hear Dalton. “Huh? What was that? Abandon her immediately for the first hot piece of ass I see?”

“Motherfucker,” Dalton growls, releasing me and I grab his waist to stop him from going after his friend.

“Baby, he knows,” I tell him and he looks back to me. “He won’t let anything happen to me.”

He blows out a breath and runs his taped hand through his hair.

This can’t go on like this.

I know he’s worried about me.

I know he doesn’t like feeling like he doesn’t have control over the situation.
