Almost is Never Enough

But the man is going to explode if he can’t learn to relax.

Although, maybe that’s what tonight is about.

“Hyde,” someone calls and Dalton turns to look at the man standing by the entrance to the ring. He gestures to the ring and Dalton nods.

“I gotta go, baby.” He kisses me again. “I’ll see you after.”

“Go kick some ass, handsome,” I tell him and he starts walking backwards away from me, a feral grin on his face that I’ve never seen before. He nods and turns to head into the ring, his shoulders straightening.

“Let’s go, Len,” Jumper calls as Gear follows after Dalton. We make our way to the front of the ring and Jumper pushes through some of the people, finding us a spot in the middle of the crowd that has a good view of the ring without being pressed right up against it.

“She’s with Hyde,” someone whispers and heat rushes to my cheeks as I resist the urge to look for whoever said it. I drop my gaze to the grass and suck in a breath.

Jesus, is everyone looking at me?

I feel like a bug under a microscope.

Jumper nudges me. “Ignore it. They’ll shut up soon.”

“Are you sure about that?” I ask as I look up at him. Out of the corner of my eye, I see someone nudge the person next to them and point to me.

Maybe this was a bad idea.

A man walks into the ring, stealing everyone’s attention as he grins and holds his hands out.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” he yells, looking around the crowd surrounding the ring. “The fight you’ve been waiting for… Hyyyyyyddddeeeeee.”

The crowd roars and I flinch, glancing back at the people around me screaming and hollering for my man and shake my head.

Goddamn.

This is trippy.

And then Dalton saunters into the ring.

I can’t take my eyes off him as his gaze locks onto his opponent and he begins to circle the ring, watching, calculating like an animal tracking its prey.

Holy shit.

A chill races across my flesh as I watch him catalogue every step the other man makes, every twitch of his fingers, every dart of his gaze.

Jumper said Hyde is where all of Dalton’s demons come out to play.

And I’m seeing it in real time.

His opponent decides to make his move, jerking left before he darts right and tries to land a punch to Dalton’s ribs. He bats it away like a gnat and his fist finds the man’s face with a sickening crunch. He stumbles back, his hand flying to his face and Hyde seizes the moment. Two more solid hits land in the man’s torso and I hear him trying to suck in a breath as he retreats to the other side of the ring.

“Kill him, Hyde,” some girl screams from next to me and I glance over at her as she lowers her tank top so much that her breasts are almost spilling out of it.

Oh, fuck this.

“Ignore it, Lennon,” Jumper warns and I turn my glare to him. He holds his hands up in surrender but shakes his head to reinforce his words. “If you start a fight right now, he will be focused on you and then he could get hurt.”

Fuck.

“Fine,” I growl, crossing my arms as I turn my focus back to my man. His opponent looks frantic, scanning the ring and Dalton like he’s trying to find anything to give him an advantage.

And Hyde is clocking every single moment.
