Almost is Never Enough

I knew, without a doubt, that she was safe.

But now, she’s back at her apartment and I’m losing my fucking mind.

I unlock my phone and pull up the feed from the cameras I had installed in her apartment while she was staying here. She doesn’t know about them and she’s probably going to be all kinds of pissed if she ever finds out about them.

I can’t bring myself to care that much.

Someone drugged her, wanted to cause her harm, and I can’t just let her walk around unprotected.

I check the cameras again.

She’s in her kitchen, dancing and putting together a sandwich at the counter, completely oblivious that I’m watching her.

A sigh leaves me.

She’s safe.

“Let’s move on to Raya and Joey,” Storm says, pulling my attention back to church and my brothers seated around the table. “Streak, what do we know about Derek?”

Streak clicks something on his computer and a map pops up on the wall from the projector in front of him. There are dots all over the map.

“Derek seems to be living his life normally,” he says, looking rather annoyed. “He goes to work. He goes home. He has gone out to a bar a couple times but he doesn’t spend all night there, just long enough to get something to eat and maybe have a beer or two. Looking at his movements, I would say he’s accepted that Raya and Joey are gone.”

“Bullshit,” I mutter and Streak shoots me a look.

“I didn’t say I believe that, fucker. I just said that’s how it looks.”

Moose sighs, scrubbing a hand down his face. “We all know that he wouldn’t give her up that easily.”

“We need to get her out of town,” I stress and Storm leans back in his seat, crossing his arms over his chest.

“We’ve been over this, Rooster.” He shakes his head. “We don’t have the resources. Unless you’ve come up with a way to get her out of town, we can’t do it.”

Kodiak kisses his teeth. “Technically, that’s not true. We could afford to get her out of town and set her up somewhere new…”

“And who would protect her then?” Storm snaps. “We can’t just send her across the country with no fucking help, can we?”

“Not to mention,” Fuzz adds. “It sets a precedent that we couldn’t afford to keep up.”

I tune them out, my chest tight and a prickling sensation just under my skin as I turn back to the camera feed. Lennon is at her kitchen table, eating her lunch. I flick to the outside cameras that Calvin gave me access to and check the street.

The morning, we got the test results back on Lennon’s bloodwork, I called Calvin and told him everything. He insisted on giving her the next morning off and said he’d cover her shift personally. But he made me promise that I would keep an eye on her.

Hence the cameras.

Because I knew she’d want to go home eventually. She’s too damn stubborn and independent to just stay locked up here at the clubhouse until I find the fucker who thought he could drug my girl and get away with it.

When she went to work yesterday, I went with her and sat in the dining room through her entire shift. She acted annoyed but every time she glanced over at me, sitting at the same table I sat at the day I got between her and Owen, she let out a sigh and her entire body sagged.

She was relieved that I was there.

“I may have a solution,” Hawk says, pulling my attention up to the meeting around me. Hawk is one of the quietest fuckers I’ve ever met in my life so if he’s saying something, it’s usually important. “Old army buddy of mine called me a couple days ago and told me he’s looking to start up a network of like-minded individuals who could help shuttle women across the country and set them up in new lives. He asked if we’d be interested and I told him I’d bring it to y’all.”

Kodiak leans back in his seat, nodding. “Shit. This could be the solution we need.”

“What would it require of us?” Storm asks, his brow drawn together as he studies Hawk. Hawk shakes his head.

“Don’t know particulars yet. He just asked if we’d be interested.”
