Sophie and the Bad Teacher

My heart started pounding. I didn’t know if it was the tequila or this guy’s persistence, but suddenly the idea of him being here didn’t seem so bad. I bit the inside of my lip as I stared at his message.

My phone buzzed again: “Tell me you’ve been dreaming of my lips on your skin again too.”

“Nope.”

“You sure about that, Aphrodite?”

I hadn’t been dreaming of that. But it was easy to picture it now.

Luckily Jacob finally texted me back, before I could do something stupid. Like tell a complete stranger my location.

“I think you’re fully capable of dancing by yourself, Soph,” Jacob texted.

“But I want to dance with you.”

“Then what are you waiting for?”

I looked back into the living room where the furniture had been pushed to the side to make a makeshift dance floor. Jacob was to the side, leaning against the wall. He looked up from his phone and smiled at me.

I smiled back and shoved my phone into my pocket. But then I quickly pulled it out and sent my mystery man one last message. “Have fun dreaming of me, mere mortal.” And then I grabbed my bottle of tequila and walked over to Jacob.

“That kind of night?” Jacob asked and eyed the bottle.

I handed it to him. “If you mean a night to celebrate...yes. Congrats on the touchdown.”

He took a swig instead of responding.

“You wanted to dance?” I asked.

He laughed. “You wanted to dance.”

“You know you want to dance with me, Jacob.”

He took another swig from the tequila bottle. “Lead the way, Soph.”

I grabbed his hand and pulled him onto the dance floor. Jacob was the best dancer I knew. But he seemed more interested in drinking than dancing tonight.

His hand slipped to my waist. “What were you doing before you texted me? You looked happy with something on your phone.”

“Were you watching me?”

Jacob laughed. “I was waiting for you to pull me onto the dance floor.”

I was way too transparent.

“So...what were you doing? Before you texted?” Jacob asked again.

“I was messaging my mystery man.”

“You’re humoring him now? I thought we were on the same page.”

I looped my hand behind Jacob’s neck. “I’m just messing with him, really.”

“I don’t trust him,” Jacob said.

“I know you don’t.” I didn’t either. But I couldn’t say that messaging him hadn’t been a little fun. Even if the guy did press my buttons.

“You didn’t give him your number or anything, did you?”
