Chapter 30
Noah drove the Nashville Land Rover towards the estate, more butterflies fluttering in his stomach than he’d had the first day of Basic in the Marine Corps.
Logically, he knew everything should be fine. Jace Monroe really was a stand-up guy and a good alpha. He’d talk to Mina and see that she really wanted to mate with Noah, and then he’d convince Jace his commitment to her and Brock was real.
Jace wouldn’t want to separate them if they really cared about each other. All the Silverlake shifters were suckers for true love.
His other uneasiness had to do with leaving Mina and Brock behind at the cabin. It wasn’t that he didn’t trust Flynn and his crew, or Jesse and Rafe and Terin. It was just that being apart from his mate when she might be in danger gave him this horrible ripping feeling in the middle of his chest.
His wolf was howling, and it was all he could do not to turn the Rover around and go back. But that really would fuck them both with Jace. He was responsible for Mina and Brock; he had to see this through for them.
He pulled up to the gates and the security guard came out of the booth to talk to him. That was odd; they knew him and would usually just wave him through, especially since he was driving a vehicle from the pack fleet.
But the guard wasn’t someone he knew—the guy barely looked familiar.
“Step out of the truck, please.”
Noah narrowed his eyes. Something about this didn’t feel right.
“Is something wrong? I’m a resident here—Noah Reilly—and I’m bringing a message from your alpha to his alpha, Jace Monroe.”
It was a little stretching of the truth, but dropping the names should get this idiot’s attention.
The guard sneered. “Our alpha is Tyrone Jenkins,” he said. “And you’ll see Jace Monroe soon enough. Now get out of the fucking truck, spy.”
Three other security guards came out of the gatehouse and surrounded the truck, weapons pointed at Noah.
Oh, fuck.
The Nashville pack had to pick today to start a revolution.
They cuffed Noah’s hands behind his back with zip ties and drove him up to the mansion in one of the security trucks, a gun barrel in his ribs the whole way. He supposed he was lucky they hadn’t shot him on sight, but maybe his association with the Silverlake pack was enough to make them think twice.
Jesse they could get away with killing; in fact, they’d have to kill him if he didn’t relinquish the Nashville pack. In order to take over as alpha, Tyrone had to challenge Jesse and defeat him in battle. It was supposed to be a fair challenge witnessed by the whole pack, but it wouldn’t be the first time an alpha had been murdered and the scene set up to look like a challenge.
But they’d never get away with killing Jace as well. He was alpha of another pack entirely, and killing both him and Jesse would trigger a Council investigation Tyrone couldn’t afford. More likely they had Jace locked up somewhere until Tyrone was firmly in control and could ransom him back.
He hoped to hell they cared enough to ransom him too. And he worried what would happen to Mina and Brock in the meantime.
When they got up to the mansion, two of them took him in the back way, up to the offices. Outside the door of the office Jace used when he was in Nashville was a guard in full battle gear, helmet and all, standing at parade rest and gazing down the hall toward the front staircase.
He didn’t turn around as they approached. As they got closer, Noah realized the asshole had fucking earbuds in his ears.
Noah’s captors began to growl.
Ouch. Here was one amateur who was about get himself ripped a new one.
As they approached, one of Noah’s guards put out a hand to stop him and the other guard. He walked up quietly behind the guard at the door, assault weapon held butt forward, undoubtedly to smack this untrained loser upside the head before he knew what hit him.
Noah’s guard was grinning, but unfortunately he was smart enough to still be watching Noah, who was waiting for just a split-second opening to make his move.
The first guard swung the rifle butt. Before it connected, the guard with the earbuds whipped around with stunning swiftness, driving his elbow into the guard’s face, smashing his nose.
Noah took advantage of the distraction to head-butt his own guard. He followed that with a sweeping kick that took the guy’s legs out from under him. Noah followed him to the floor, crooking one leg around his neck and putting pressure on it until he passed out.
He rolled back to his feet just in time to see his other captor crumple to the ground. The guard from the doorway lifted his head and gave him a feral grin.
It was Jace Monroe.
