“Hey, Killian, I want you to meet—”
“Gentle Eyes?”
The giant straightened with a packet of frozen sausages in one hand. His eyes rounded, then his face split into a massive grin.
“Holy shit! Sweet Pea? Whatcha doin’ here?”
I collapsed into a fit of giggles.
His gaze bounced from me to Logan. “Thor! Thor!” He pointed the sausages at me. “This is her! The girl I told you about! Sweet Pea!”
I half-turned to Logan.
My smile faltered. Those small but alarming signs were there—right eye twitching, head tilted left, fingers curling into fists, veins thickening.
Gentle Eyes noticed too because he backed behind the kitchen table.
“What,” Logan asked with eerie calm, “did you just call her?”
“How was I supposed to know she’s your buddy?” He held up his hands.
Logan grabbed me by the shoulders and placed me to the side like a small piece of furniture, not looking at me. Reddish irises fixed on Gentle Eyes as Logan prowled over.
“You said if you never found your mate, you’d marry this Sweet Pea!”
The kitchen table scraped across the floor as Killian kept it between them. “Oh, that!” He laughed heartily. “I was joking!”
“You weren’t.”
Logan halted, then. His eyes widened, veins filling with tar.
“You said her ass was fresh bread!” A snarl erupted from him. “In front of the whole fucking team!”
Killian snapped his fingers. “Oh! Right! I did!”
I blushed and patted my butt—never heard anyone compare it to food before.
The table was thrown sideways. Beer bottles toppled, and a chair spun on the tiles. Logan vaulted over the island instead of going around it. “Oh, come on, T!” Killian bolted but was caught by his shirt and pinned to the fridge, hard enough to rattle every magnet; one fell on my shoe.
“She. Is. My. Mate.” Each word came with another shove. “Mine!”
“What?!” It looked like someone had just told Killian that Santa Claus really existed. “She is…” Killian opened and closed his mouth. Instead of cowering, he barked out a laugh, slapping Logan on the shoulder. “Man! This is absolutely amazing!”
Logan didn’t think that, at all. Gritting his teeth, he struggled to keep Lucien in. His nails lengthened, and blood trickled from where his fingers were digging into Killian’s neck.
I stepped over the fallen chair and laid a hand on Logan’s forearm. His muscles remained rigid for a heartbeat then softened beneath my palm. “Lucien. Hey. Killian was joking. Let go.”
With an annoyed huff, Logan released Killian and glanced down at me, eyes narrowing. “So you are Sweet Pea?” He bared his canines and scowled at Gentle Eyes, again grabbing him by his collar. “Call her that again and I’ll kick you off the team.”
Killian grinned wider, adjusting his crumpled shirt. “Didn’t say anything that ain’t true!”
“You said she was the most beautiful girl you’ve ever seen.”
He winked at me. “Which is true.”
“You said you wanted to fucking marry my mate, Killian.”
“Also true. Sweet Pea, would ya marry me?”
