He sat back and released her hand as the waitress set everything in front of them.
They both dug in.
“This is really good.”
She smiled. “I thought you’d like it.”
They were quiet as they ate.
She sighed and pushed her plate away.
He pointed to it. “That’s all you’re eating?”
“Yes. I’m half your size and don’t have the muscle mass. Plus, I usually graze all day.”
“All right.”
“Don’t worry, I love food too much to give it up.”
He grinned, nodded, and went back to eating.
They shared a dessert and coffee, talking and ignoring everyone around them.
“What are you doing tomorrow?”
“I have to go to the ranch for a few hours after Evan’s gone.”
“Evan?”
“My late husband’s partner. He’s in your building. He comes over sometimes and fixes things or hangs out with Jayden.”
Roman didn’t know how he felt about that. He couldn’t remember anyone named Evan, but he’d met so many people it didn’t surprise him.
“I know cops are good at taking care of their own.”
“The whole department was great.”
The first thought in his head was, of course, they were. They wanted to get close to you, but he didn’t say it.
“I’m glad you had someone to depend on.”
She nodded and sipped her coffee.
“I’d like to see you tomorrow,” he said. The thought of going for several days without seeing her was unacceptable.
“Jayden’s going to be at his friend’s until later in the day. What are you thinking?”
“Are you training tomorrow?”
“Yes, I’ve got a few I’m putting through their paces.”
“Do you mind if I come with you?”
“Really? Are you sure? I don’t want you to get bored.”
“Bored watching you? Not going to happen.”
She smiled shyly. “I’d like you to be there. Do you want to come get me or meet out there?”
