“If you don’t like it, we can—”

“No, I love it,” I quickly say, not wanting them to think I’m ungrateful. “It’s the nicest thing anyone has ever done for me. Thank you. I just need a moment,” I mutter, or I’m going to cry right in front of them.

Isla offers me a beer. “There’s a pool and beautiful garden outside if you want some fresh air.”

Smiling back, I take the beer and tell them I’ll be right back. As I step outside, my eyes widen as I take in the stunning view. There’s nothing but land as far as the eye can see, with lush green trees surrounded by a beautiful sunset. A tear drops from my eye, but I brush it away before it can trail down my face.

Meeting these women has turned my day around, and suddenly things don’t look so bad. Suit might not want me, but that doesn’t mean I can’t try to find my place here. I don’t have many options.

Taking a few sips of the beer for some liquid courage, I turn back around.

“Did you see Suit’s wife?” I hear a woman ask as I’m about to step back inside.

“Yeah, she’s definitely not his type,” another one replies cattily, amusement in her tone.

“It’s in name only. He said we have to be nice to her.”

“She’s no threat. Just ignore her,” the last one replies.

I stand still until the voices disappear, trying to pretend the words don’t hurt.

I guess not all of the women here are my friends.

“You okay?” an extremely tall, muscular, bearded man asks. He’s got dark hair, longer on top and shorter on the sides, and a scar that slashes down his face.

“Yeah.” I nod, recognizing him as the man who stood next to Suit when we got married. “I’m Elena.”

“Angel,” he replies, nodding toward the bar. “Suit know where you are?”

“Doubt he cares,” I reply, shrugging. “But the women made me a cake. I’m heading back inside now.”

His dark eyes flicker. “Come.” He walks toward the bar, and I follow behind him.

There are a lot more people sitting around when I walk back into the room, and Suit is there nursing a glass of what looks like scotch or whiskey. His eyes follow me through the room, but he doesn’t make a move to approach. A woman with curly dark hair takes a seat next to him, stealing his attention.

Ora wraps her arm around me when she sees me. “It must be such an emotional day for you. Do you want to cut the cake now, or do you want a little more time?”

“Now is perfect.” I smile but wince when she calls Suit over. I keep my gaze on the cake, even when I feel him standing next to me.

“Do you want to cut it?” Suit asks in a low rumble, and I nod, taking the knife from his hand.

“It’s almost too pretty to cut,” I say, smiling at the women. “Thank you all again.”

“You’re welcome,” Lu replies, her green eyes softening on me.

“We want you to feel welcome,” Ora adds, glancing at Suit before returning her gaze to me.

I cut a slice from the top layer and put it on a plate, and then, without thinking, I pick up the slice and hold it up to Suit’s lips, just like we do at all of our weddings.

Slate-gray eyes stare down at me before he takes a bite. The women all clap and cheer, while the men watch on with curious glances.

He makes no move to feed me back, just watching me with an intense look in his eyes instead, so I take a bite, smiling widely. “It’s delicious.”

“You’ve outdone yourself, ladies,” Suit says to Lu and Ora, dragging his gaze from me.

Everyone comes to get a piece of cake, and Suit disappears into the crowd.

Xanthe comes and stands next to me, her brow furrowing. “Do you have a phone?”
