Nothing.

I glance toward the camera tucked discreetly into the corner near the ceiling.

There you are.

Santo is probably watching me.

Fine. I’m not here to steal anything.

Technically.

Elena told me about the library one night. Third floor. Double doors. Her mother’s journals kept on a shelf toward the back.

She also told me she stole one of them from Santo.

Considering I am here to get the rest for her, perhaps theft is becoming a family tradition.

I take the stairs.

The bedrooms are on the second floor. I remember that much from dinner.

The third floor is quieter.

A long corridor stretches in both directions, lined with dark wood, old paintings, and enough dramatic lighting to make the entire house feel like it expects someone to be murdered eventually.

“This house is ridiculous.”

Another camera watches from the corner. I look directly into it.

“If you have a problem, come find me.”

Nothing happens.

Good enough.

At the end of the hall, I find two enormous wooden doors.

I push them open.

The library is massive.

Floor-to-ceiling shelves cover nearly every wall. Tall windows overlook the back of the property, sunlight spilling across dark floors and several easels near the glass. Paints, brushes, and canvases are arranged beside them.

I stop.

“A library and an art studio.”

Naturally.

Nothing in Santo Amato’s life can simply be one thing.

I move deeper into the room.

Elena said the journals were toward the back. That narrows down approximately four thousand books.

Eventually, I find six that don’t match the rest. Different sizes. Some worn leather, some composition notebooks, handwritten dates across the covers.

These have to be them.
