I take all six.
Elena deserves every word her mother left behind.
I turn toward the door. Santo stands there.
Damn.
His expression tells me several things immediately.
Most importantly, he did not know I was here.
“What,” he says very quietly, “are you doing in my house?”
I look down at the journals in my arms.
Then back at him. “The guard opened the gate.”
His face does not change.
“The front door was open.”
Still nothing.
“And considering you have cameras every six feet, I assumed you knew I was here.”
“You assumed incorrectly.”
“That appears to be the case.”
His attention drops to the journals.
Something colder enters his expression. “Put those down.”
“I need them for Elena.”
“No.”
“They’re for Elena.”
“I heard you.”
“Then this should be easy.”
His eyes lift to mine. “Those are my mother’s journals.”
“They’re also Elena’s mother’s journals.”
His jaw tightens. “They belong to me.”
“The last time I checked, your mother managed to give birth to more than one child.”
His stare turns lethal.
I should probably stop.
I don’t.
“So I’d argue Elena has an equal claim.”
