“She has school here. Her family is here. We’ll live here. But we have a home in Florida, and she loves it. I’m not promising you she’ll never leave the city.”

Angelo looks ready to begin again.

Adriana tightens her hand on his shoulder.

He swears beneath his breath. “Fine.”

The word sounds like it physically injures him.

“Great. We have a deal, then.”

He gives one reluctant nod.

The negotiation is finished. It should feel like a victory.

Instead, I think of Elena asking me to come home.

“I need something else.”

Angelo laughs without humor.

“Great. What else do you want to take from me?”

Luciano

Santo’s gate opens before I reach it.

I slow the SUV.

One of his guards stands inside the security booth and gives me a short nod as I pass.

Interesting.

I expected more resistance.

The last time I came here, men were positioned throughout the property.

Today, I see no one after the gate.

Maybe Santo knows why I’m here. That would save time.

I pull beneath the covered entrance and get out.

The front door is open. Not unlocked.

Open.

I stand there for a moment.

“For someone obsessed with surveillance, your security is questionable, Amato.”

No one answers so I step inside.

The foyer is empty. No guards. No Mrs. Keen. No voices carrying from another room.
