“It’s the only reason you’re taking his side.”

“I’m not taking his side. I’m taking Elena’s.”

“That’s not any better, Tesoro.”

Adriana moves closer and places a hand on his arm. “What are you going to do? Lock Elena inside the penthouse, force her to marry someone else after she tells you she loves Luciano?”

“He took her out of the state.”

“You were sending men to pack her belongings.”

“Because she was living in his house.”

“She still is,” I interject.

Angelo points at me. “He’s not helping himself. He’s going to start a fucking war between us.”

“I’m not trying to help myself,” I say. “I’ll go to war for Elena.”

Adriana grips Angelo’s arm more tightly.

“Please, don’t indulge him. You cannot go to war with my brother because Elena fell in love with him.”

“He’s bluffing,” Angelo grits.

“Try me.”

Angelo’s gaze locks onto mine. “You’d destroy the alliance over this? Over Elena.”

“I. Will go to war. For Elena.”

Adriana shuts her eyes and sighs. “This baby is going to be born into the stupidest family alive.”

“No one is going to war,” Angelo says.

“That decision is yours.”

His stare remains fixed on mine.

I don’t look away.

Eventually, Adriana rubs her hand slowly over his shoulder.

“Amor.”

Angelo exhales through his nose. “Fine.”

Adriana’s hand stills.

He points at me.

“Whatever agreement comes from Valentina’s marriage, I get a portion.”

“Agreed.”

“And Elena stays in the city.”

“She stays wherever she chooses.”
