“Tell me about it,” Rafe grumbled, his muscles tensing as he fought to keep his own urges under control. He knew that the spell could potentially affect him but being an alpha, he’d always been able to resist such effects in the past. Now, however, with Nora so close, he found himself struggling to maintain his usual ironclad willpower. She was after all his mate.

His unmated mate.

Finally, they were free of the bar melee. They slipped out the back door into the alley behind the bar, leaving the chaos inside behind them.

“Well, that was...something,” Nora said, leaning against the brick wall to catch her breath. The cool night air felt good after the electrifying dash through so many aroused individuals.

Rafe paced in front of her, radiating restless energy. His eyes kept darting to her neck. “The spell is getting stronger. I can feel it,” he growled.

Nora’s own body thrummed, but she kept it together. Barely. “Down boy. We need to figure this out.”

Rafe closed his eyes and took a deep breath. When he opened them, they were back to their usual blue color.

“So...” Nora said, aiming for a casual tone. “Come here often?”

Rafe’s lips quirked. “Not usually, no. But I’m really glad I was here tonight.”

“No kidding,” Nora muttered. She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. “Well, since we have to work together, perhaps we should get to know each other.”

Rafe raised an eyebrow. “Trying to distract me from the mating urge, little witch?”

Nora blushed but didn’t back down from his intense gaze. “I don’t know what you mean.”

Chuckling, Rafe stepped closer, backing her against the brick wall, hands on either side of her head. He leaned in, lips nearly grazing her ear.

“You smell like berries and cream. And your skin is so soft...” he murmured. “You have no idea how long I’ve waited for you.”

“You just met me,” she said with a laugh. Nora’s breath caught, heart pounding. She placed a hand on his chest, gently pushing him back.

“Down boy,” she whispered, echoing her words from earlier.

“No way in hell,” he whispered back. “I knew you were mine the second I saw you. Caught your scent. My wolf recognized you as our mate.”

Nora’s breath caught in the back of her throat. Mates? Her? Him? A wolf and a witch? Impossible.

But then, wasn’t magic impossible?

He brushed his lips over hers and she melted into him, sparks igniting at the contact. She fisted his shirt to keep her knees from buckling.

Rafe nipped her lower lip. “Just a taste, mate. I plan to savor you all night long.”

Her core clenched in anticipation as she swallowed a moan. All her life, she never imagined she’d find someone—the someone. Now fate had brought her Rafe. If she dared to believe.

He nuzzled her neck, inhaling deeply. “Your scent drives me wild.”

Nora titled her head to give him access, desire burning away her common sense.

Just then a loud crash sounded, and Rafe turned, his instinct to protect on high alert. Across the street, a group of teenagers laughed, then ran away. They had thrown a trash can through a store window.

Rafe turned back around, his fists clenched and his eyes glowing a light silver. “Sorry. I need to get you out of here. The spell makes it hard to control my...urges. And takes away my common sense.”

“I know just how you feel, wolf man.” Nora straightened her clothes, cheeks still flushed. “Then let’s hurry and find this cabin of Dil’s. Before we both lose control.”

One of his dark eyebrows arched. “So, you think, being alone, in a remote cabin, will calm things down between us?”

Nora’s pussy clenched thinking of being alone with him. “Remote is the key word here. Maybe the spell is contained to the town, and we won’t feel it there.”

Rafe gave a deep chuckle. “You do realize the spell is not all that’s going on here, don’t you, pretty baby?” He backed her up against the wall again. “The mating heat is here to stay as far as you and I are concerned, little witch.”
