“We, we can’t think about that now.” Unable to resist, she placed her hands on his chest again. This time, the feel of his heart beating actually making her feel calmer.

“You’re right. We will deal with that when the time comes.” Rafe looked up and down the street, seeking an avenue of escape. “Do you have a car around here?”

“Yeah, I do. It’s about a block away. Theo doesn’t like the employees to take up parking space.” Nora kept her gaze fixed ahead as they walked, trying to ignore the sounds of passion erupting from every shadowed alley and dark corner. As far as she could tell the mating spell had no effect on her whatsoever. The big, bad wolf walking beside her was a different story.

Beside her, Rafe’s jaw was clenched, his shoulders rigid. She could practically feel the tension rolling off him in waves.

“How are you holding up?” she asked.

“I’ve been better,” he bit out. “The wolf wants out. It’s taking everything in me to keep control.”

Nora nodded, swallowing hard. She knew how powerful a wolf’s instincts could be, especially an alpha like Rafe.

“Just try to focus on our goal,” she said gently. “Getting out of town.”

They continued in tense silence. The raucous noises around them grew louder, more frantic. Rafe’s shoulders hunched further, nearly up to his ears.

Nora bit her lip. She had to do something before he lost it completely.

“Here,” she said, stopping abruptly. “Take my hand.”

Rafe looked at her extended hand warily. “I’m not sure that’s wise.”

“Trust me,” she insisted. “If I am your mate—and I’m not saying I am—maybe the physical contact will help settle your wolf.”

Rafe knew that touching her would have the opposite effect, but he couldn’t resist her, or the thought of touching her, however innocently. He laced his fingers through hers. Warmth instantly spread between them. He saw her nipples hardened beneath her t-shirt and could smell the scent of her arousal spike.

His cock hardened to the point of pain and his fangs dropped, eager to taste her.

So much for having a calming effect.

They reached Nora’s car and hands shaking, she fumbled with her keys. Rafe helped her in and strode around the front, keeping an eye on everything and anything.

She quickly got out her phone and dialed her parents’ number.

“Come on, pick up,” she muttered, teeth clenched. The call went straight to voicemail. She sighed, imagining the worst. “Great. They’re probably humping like rabbits.”

“They are mated so hopefully this isn’t affecting them. Or only in a good way.” He gave her wink and started the car. “I’m assuming you know the way to this cabin?”

“Oh, yeah, I do.” She quickly gave him directions and they were on their way. Once past the town’s boundaries, it was as if a weight lifted from Nora’s shoulders. She turned her head to look at Rafe. “Maybe you were right. The further we get from the town, the easier this will be.”

“Maybe. But the question is how long with this last?”

Nora chewed on her lower lip. “I’m probably not the best person to ask that question.”

Rafe looked at her. “What do you mean?”

“I guess it’s confession time. My powers are a little wonky. To put it nicely.”

“Mmm. Should I be concerned you’ll turn me into a toad?” He was smiling as he asked the question.

“I have done it before.”

“Seriously?”

“Yes, seriously.”

“Well, I’m willing to take my chances.”
