I follow his gaze, and anger flashes through me. Of course, he jumped. What the hell is he doing here anyway? This isn’t football.
Shit. Did I take too long? Is he asking her out? Is she going to say yes?
She looks up.
“Well, she’s not even looking at him, so I think I’m good.”
“She can’t wait forever.”
“I know.”
“So what are you waiting for?”
“The right time.”
Tobias lets out a groan.
“What?” I ask.
“Don’t be that guy. Don’t be the guy who keeps waiting. Be the guy who goes after what he wants and takes it.”
“I am.”
“No, you’re waiting for something bad to happen just so you can saytold you so. Face it, Simon, nothing bad is going to happen. It’s your turn, man. You need to go get your girl.”
For as many times that I’ve talked to the guy in the past couple of weeks, that’s the first time someone has made that comment.
Is that what I’m doing? Waiting around for something bad to happen?
What happens if it never happens? Then I’ve been making Greer wait for what? Nothing. To cause us both more heartache.
We take our seats in the front row again, and when Grey’s turn comes up, all eyes fall on us the moment Beck starts yelling.
Greer is sitting with Calla in the same spot as last weekend. Her eyes flash to mine. I wave. She waves back.
Why isn’t she sitting with me? I asked her to. She nodded like that was something she wanted. Fuck. Am I too late?
Tobias nudges me and then glares at me. “Man up.”
I would laugh at his words, but hell, he’s right.
As soon as the night’s competition is over, Grey is sitting at number one. One more weekend and he’ll be the winner.
He runs up to me with a giant smile.
“How cool was that?” he asks me.
I give him knuckles, and then he runs right by me to see Greer. I walk over, listening to their excitement over the night.
When they’re finished, she looks up at me.
“You better watch out for this one,” she says. “He’s too good.”
“Tell me about it.”
She nods and then points over her shoulder.
“Well, I’ll see you guys later.”
