“Cool.”

He gives me one more hug and then starts for the door where a few of his friends are goofing around.

“So we’ll see you on Monday?” Simon asks, and I nod.

“Yes. Monday.”

“Have a good night, Greer.”

“Have a good night, Simon.”

He follows his son, then stops and turns.

“Greer?”

I look up.

“How about next week, you sit with me?”

I pinch my lips together to keep from smiling like a fool, but I nod.

“Okay.”

“Okay,” he repeats, smirking as he heads for the door, glancing over his shoulder once before they leave.

I blow out a breath and count to ten before I do the same.

It was something small, but the hope that was beginning to fade shines a little brighter now.

CHAPTER THIRTY

SIMON

The echo of chatter and kids shouting and practicing on the mats inside the gym are all I hear when we step into the gymnasium the next week.

It’s week two of ninja warrior competitions for Grey, and I have a feeling he’ll be at the top of the charts by the time the night is through.

I scan the gym as soon as we are inside.

“Are you really still not talking to Greer?”

“Greer and I talk,” I say to Tobias as we wait for the competition to begin.

“You know what I mean.”

I sigh and nod. “Yeah, I do. I will. Soon.”

Since that night I found Greer and Grey asleep on the couch, I’ve worked hard to correct any negative thoughts about my future. But hell, I’ve been thinking about them for a long time, and it’s hard to convince myself otherwise. I’ve googled and researched how to self-heal until my eyes burn from the screen. Plus, the guys and I had an hour-long chat one night and since then, they all text me each day to check in. Talking about it helps. It’s nice to get different points of view on it. Especially from my friends who have had to fight their own demons to get to where they are in their relationships today.

I feel like I’m in a good place to talk to Greer, but just walking up to her and saying “Okay, I’m ready. I changed my mind” feels… lame and wrong.

It’s why last week I invited her to sit with me today. I knew I’d see her all week, but I didn’t want her to think that she needed to avoid me outside of that. And let me tell you, another week of not having Greer the way I want was pure hell.

It also solidified a lot for me. I write romance novels, for crying out loud. This isn’t the time to slack off. This is grand gesture time. And that thought alone is huge progress for me.

“I’ll talk to her soon.”

“How soon?” he asks. “Because I’m pretty sure that Grey’s football coach is talking to her right now, and his body language says that he knows she’s single.”
