“Bye, Greer!” Grey says as she leaves.

After a moment, Grey steps in front of me with raised brows.

“Dad?”

“Yeah?”

“If you like Greer, what are you waiting for?”

Did Tobias tell him to say that?

“You know what, bud? I don’t think I am anymore.” I put my hands on his shoulders and give him a squeeze. “Do you want to celebrate with ice cream and dinner or by us beating Greer home so we can win her back?”

“Umm, is that even a question? Win Greer back!” He heads for the door. He turns quickly to walk backward. “Then we get dinner and ice cream.”

I chuckle at his response.

Sounds like a plan to me.

CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE

GREER

As soon as I get home, I change into sweats and slip on one of Simon’s shirts that he left here. I’d sit and smell it like a real lovesick puppy, but I washed it, and the smell is gone.

Doesn’t mean I won’t wallow any less.

I was sure that by the end of the summer Simon would… it doesn’t matter. I was wrong. I drag my feet down my hall and into the kitchen and grab the pint of ice cream I hide in the back. My Ben and Jerry’s Cherry Garcia.

I snap a picture of it and send it in a group text with Willa and Calla.

Willa

Shit.

Calla

Oh, no. The full sugar version.

Willa

What happened? I’m headed over.

Calla

Me too.

I flop onto my couch and turn on the TV, scrolling through my phone to order a pizza online.

I’m going full-blown bum. I’m going to eat my feelings into next month, and I won’t feel guilty about it for one minute.

An email notification drops down from the top of my screen. It’s from one of the many stupid dating apps that I’m subscribed to. I’d deleted the apps, but not my accounts. So, I redownload the app, log in, and delete my account.

Then I log into the next one and delete that one too.

Once all three are deleted, I toss my phone to the side.

I feel like I did nothing but backtrack this summer.
