The song played loudly from his phone in the otherwise silent house, and Trevor was so shocked and hurt that he couldn’t even process all the words. Just bits and pieces, shards of sharp glass meant to pierce him where it would hurt the most.
In the quiet after the message ended, he heard a groan coming from the living room. But he couldn’t move, still trying to understand how Skyler had been mad enough at him to want to hurt him like this.
He played it again.
You spent all this time pretending to be a man
But turns out you’re just a scared little boy
Running from your problems, running from me
I’ve given you everything but get nothing in return
So don’t you lie and tell me you love me
I don’t wanna ever hear it again
‘Cause you’re the one who walked away
Shut the door in my face like you could erase
All these years of memories
The haunting proof of you and me
Don’t tell me that you need me
Don’t say it to my face
Because if you need me, you wouldn’t leave me
So just go ahead and walk away
And maybe I’ll get over you someday
“What are you doing?”
Trevor jumped at the sound of Skyler’s voice in front of him, interrupting the voice through the speaker.
Skyler’s eyes widened as he heard himself. He looked frantically between Trevor’s face and the phone in his hand. “Don’t listen to that!”
Too late.
The song was still playing, and he should stop it, but he couldn’t. He couldn’t do anything.
“Please turn it off!” Skyler pleaded. “Please. Stop! I didn’t mean it, I wasn’t thinking. I was upset, and I had a drink, and I’m sorry, I love you. Just delete it, you have to delete it, please!”
So don’t you lie and tell me you love me. I don’t wanna ever hear it again.
“Trevor!”
“I…”
“Give it to me, I’ll delete it!” Suddenly, Skyler lunged at him, snapping him out of his daze. “Give me the damn phone!”
“No.” He tried to hold it out of Skyler’s reach, but Skyler was a bit taller than him, had longer arms. And in his panic, Skyler was like a wild animal.
The next thing he knew, Skyler was wrenching the phone out of his grip, and then he threw it so hard it smashed into a cabinet before landing on the floor. Shattered. Trevor didn’t even need to look at it to know. Skyler’s voice was no longer coming out of the speaker.
