And. It wasn’t only Skyler’s voice saved on that phone.

His mom.

Her voicemail.

Skyler looked shocked at what he’d done, and he was already opening his mouth and babbling about how he hadn’t meant to do it, but Trevor wasn’t listening. He’d never told Skyler about the voicemail. Never told him how he listened to it whenever he missed his mom too much. There wasn’t any particular reason he hadn’t told him. He told Skyler everything else, but this had just felt like it should be his. His last piece of his mom that he didn’t want to share.

And now it was gone.

“Get the fuck out.” He was surprised at how steady his voice came out when his whole body was shaking.

Skyler shook his head furiously. “No. No, I’m sorry, please!”

Trevor couldn’t do this. He was going to hit something. And Skyler was all he could see right now, waving a bright red cape at the bull. “Get away from me!” he barked, stepping back as Skyler tried to come closer. “You need to leave.”

“No!” Skyler cried, shaking his head so hard again it looked like his neck might snap. He rushed at Trevor then, and before Trevor could dodge him, he’d thrown himself to the kitchen floor and wrapped himself around Trevor’s legs. “No, please, I can’t!”

He was literally on his knees begging, but in this moment, Trevor couldn’t find an ounce of sympathy for him.

“Fine, I’ll leave,” he told him.

Skyler cried out pathetically and clung to him tighter, but Trevor had rage fueling him. He dragged Skyler with him out of the kitchen and into the living room, Skyler’s cries only background noise.

When he finally managed to get free, he rushed to the door, but Skyler didn’t follow him.

“Fine!” Skyler screamed, hysterical enough to make Trevor glance back. He was a crumpled heap on the floor, but when his eyes met Trevor’s, they were steely and sharp. “Go back to your girlfriend and fuck her again if that’s what you want!”

“Excuse me?”

Skyler stood up ungracefully, but he made no move to reach Trevor. “I’m sure that’s what you were doing last night, right?”

Andthat.

That was it.

Trevor was done.

Yes, he’d gone to Sierra’s last night, but only because he’d been too embarrassed to go to any of the guys. And if this was what Skyler thought of him, after all this time, that he’d dothatto him…

He probably didn’t mean it.

But he’d said it.

And Trevor only had one thing left to say.

“Fuck you.”

Chapter Thirty-Nine

Before

TREVOR

Trevor went to Oli’s.He felt pathetic doing it, but he didn’t care anymore. He needed a friend.

He didn’t have a phone so he couldn’t call, and he was lucky Oli answered his door. Oli frowned when he saw him, which told Trevor he must look as awful as he felt. Before Oli could even invite him in, he started spilling out the story. He barely registered it as Oli took him by the arm and led him through the house, sitting him at the kitchen table. Oli made coffee and Trevor talked. And sobbed. He wasn’t sure if he was even coherent, but Oli sat in front of him listening.

His untouched coffee was cold by the time he finished. When he ran out of words, he didn’t know what to do next. Oli said he’d move Trevor’s car into the garage, and then he took him to the guest room and told him to lie down. So Trevor lay there alone, fully dressed on top of the covers, and stared at the blank green wall for who knew how long.
