Walter grimaced as he put the phone on speaker and went in search of his pants. “You know that cryptic crap only pisses me off. What’s going on?”
“You won’t believe me.”
From the bed, Bing snorted. It was a quiet sound, but Walter heard it and shot him a grin. He kept his voice firm and serious as he spoke to Taide. “Try me. I’ve got a very open mind.”
He heard Taide curse under his breath, but the man finally launched into his story. “At o-dark-hundred this morning, your Grand Master Asshole shows up with the cops.”
“How the hell did he find us?”
“Bing gave an interview from the set. The old bastard had probably been watching the internet for any Red Wolf news.”
Of course. And now he’d come to stop them from filming again just to get the insurance money. “Let me guess. He claimed labor violations.”
“I told him to go fuck himself. I had the proof handy to show the cops.”
“How’d you get that?”
“You forwarded me the file, remember? In case this happened again. Good thinking, by the way.”
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.“So what’s the problem?”
“Your aunt.”
He sighed. “Just keep her out of the way—”
“With a herd of kangaroos.”
“What?” Walter shot a confused look at Bing as he mouthed,How’d she get more?
“I told you it was crazy.”
“It is crazy, but I believe you. What’s she doing with the kangaroos?”
“Planning to attack some other guy I didn’t even know was here. Do you know anything about a disaster tourist named—”
“Gator.”
“Yeah. What’s his deal?”
Walter grimaced. “Nothing good.”
“It’s a clusterfuck, Walter. The cops are freaking out about our unlicensed kangaroos, your aunt is screaming at the Gator guy, who’s filming it all, and the Grand Asshole is grinning from ear to ear. I have no idea what to do.”
Walter grimaced. He was dressed now and rapidly packing up his laptop. “I do,” he lied. “I’m on my way.”
“Get here fast. Cops and kangaroos don’t mix.”
