Except for Josh, a quiet voiceremindedher.

Whatever. She didn’t need Josh, and she didn’t need any of the other guys she usually went after. She only neededTrevor.

Trevor was handsome. Trevor was good. Trevor was herfuture.

“And what didyou think about themix-up?”

“You mean consideringI wasn’t even matched in the firstplace?”

ChapterFive

As Conrad walked to class, his backpack slung over one shoulder, he couldn’t stop thinking about all that had happened the night before. He’d been privy to two disastrous dates, and they had one thing in common: The DateMaker.

Poor Dominick had been set up with the wrong date. The dude had been so excited about his date with Harmony, only to have the whole thing blow up in his face. Not only that, the chick had spilled wine all over Dominick’s pants—the ones Conrad had lent him. Something he also blamed on Morgan Jones and her carelessness. If Dominick hadn’t gone on that stupid date, Conrad wouldn’t have to worry about replacing his favorite J. Crewchinos.

Then there was the date between Lacey and the scumbag he found making out with another girl in the bathroom—because obviously the bathroom was a super romantic place tohookup.

What kind of guy would go make out with someone else when he was on a first date with a girl as beautiful as Lacey? Not only that, but even in that short interaction on the stairs—which he had replayed in his head more times than he was willing to admit—Conrad could tell Lacey was a sweet girl who didn’t deserve what Trevor was doingtoher.

So Conrad had done some investigating. A quick search online showed an article posted by some dude named Declan Adams. He claimed that her entire business was a hoax, and Conrad believedeveryword.

His pace quickened as he walked, so distracted that he almost didn’t notice the Date Maker herself, also walking to class. Ignoring the voice in the back of his head that was screaming at him that this was a bad idea, Conrad called out, his voice coming out much more menacing than he meant. “Morgan!”

She stopped dead in her tracks and turned toward the sound of her name. When she spotted Conrad, her features went hard, and she straightened her shoulders. Morgan made no effort to go to him, nor did she try to run away and hide. She simply lifted her chin defiantly, waiting for his next move. So he made it, and walked over to where shestood.

“What do you want, Conrad?” she asked as he gotcloser.

“I want to know what’s going on with your little datingservice.”

“Get in line, you’re not the only one.” She looked directly into eyes as she said it and her words were flippant. But there was no denying the slight tremor in hervoice.

He took a deep breath, in attempt to cool his anger. “What doesthatmean?”

“It means…wait a second. I didn’t even set you up.” She paused and closed her eyes. When she reopened them, her gaze went to the sidewalk and a small line formed between her brows. “Or did I? I don’t even knowanymore.”

She wasn’t making any sense. It brought back memories of the first time they’d met. It was at the coffee shop for his interview. The so-called Date Maker had stared off into space then, too, even going so far as to grab his arm when he tried to leave. Conrad wondered what else was going on in that headofhers.

“Huh?” he eventually said, painfully aware of his own lack ofeloquence.

“This is going to sound crazy, maybe I am crazy.” She said the last bit softly, almost to herself before fixing him with a stare. “Did I set you up onadate?”

“Um,no.”

“Okay, that’s good.” She nodded, her eyes wanderingagain.

“Good? One could say I have a right to complain because you haven’t matched me yet.” He didn’t mean to say it, hating how it went against the too-cool attitude he cultivated. But seeing Morgan here, and seeing her relief over not setting him up pissed him off. He was just as deserving of a date asanyoneelse.

“Is that what this is all about?” Morgan burst out laughing, but Conrad felt his temper rising. “You’re upset that you didn’t get to go on a disastrous date?” She looked up at the sky for a moment before focusing her eyes on Conrad once more. “You know what, I’d love to set you up on a date. I mean, it can’t be any worse than all of my othermatches.”

“Ah ha! I knew there was something to what Declanwrote.”

She scowled at the mention of the article. “Wait, did he put you up to this?” Morgan looked back and forth at the students who walked across campus. “Ishehere?”

Yikes. This girl was seriously crazy. Conrad suddenly wished he could just walk away slowly and act like this whole conversation never happened, but the panic in Morgan’s eyes had him shaking his head back and forthinstead.

She let out alongsigh.

“But there is something going on with the Date Maker?” heasked.
