He closed his eyes briefly. “You were testing me.”
Shame sluiced through my gut. “Yes. I’m sorry, Evan. I’m so fucking sorry. I don’t even know why I felt the need to ask.”
He brushed a kiss over my forehead. “Probably because you haven’t looked into the therapy we discussed.”
“I’m really sorry I asked.” I leaned against his chest. “I should’ve trusted ye, and I’m sorry. I kind of hate myself a little right now.”
“None of that.” Evan stroked a hand over my hair. “And no more apologies. I get why you asked, Reid. If oursituations were reversed, I would’ve too. Particularly given the fact I marched ye to a secluded cabin in the middle of nowhere and told ye that you’d have several wolves pursuing you if you tried to sneak out.”
“Ye didn’t mean it like that, though.”
“No,” he said softly. “But I’m not surprised that’s how your brain took it.”
“I’ll move therapy to the top of my to-do list.” I let out a bitter laugh. “Assuming we get through whatever the Clarksons have up their sleeves.”
“Oh, we definitely will,” Evan said. “Especially now I know you love me. Ye think I’m going to just let them take that away from us? Absolutely fucking not.”
There was a new feeling in me. One I didn’t recognise. I rubbed at my chest uncertainly, trying to place it.
Oh.
It was belonging.
For the first time ever, I felt like I belonged somewhere. It wasn’t with the McCarthys though, although this place was starting to feel like home.
It was with Evan.
I belonged with Evan.
I celebrated the best realisation I’d ever had by throwing myself at him. I knew he’d catch me.
He always did.
My mouth crashed against his, catching his sudden intake of air. He got on board with what was happening fast, backing me up against the wall.
Pinned between Evan and a hard object was my favourite place to be. Nothing else made me feel the same combination of vulnerable and secure that having his big form surrounding me, holding me in place did.
“Lube,” I said, breaking away with a gasp. “Please tell me there’s lube here.”
Evan’s throat bobbed. “Fuck, I hope so. I’ve never brought anyone here, but maybe Hamish has.”
Given that Hamish was more of a player the rest of the clan combined, I was holding on to hope. I had no idea if he was searching for his mate or running from him. Whichever it was, the result was the same: Hamish having sex with a lot of different people.
Evan put me down for a minute as he rattled around the tiny cabin. I used the time to shove off my underwear and joggers.
When Evan turned, lube in hand, he smirked. “I’m guessing you have a direction you want to take this?”
“Course I do.” I leaned back against the wall and winked. “Bossy bottom, remember?”
“Like I could forget,” he murmured, lifting me off my feet with just one hand. “Dream of it every night before waking up next to you and wishing we lived on our own somewhere.”
Evan’s parents gave us as much space as they could, but it was their home at the end of the day. Unfortunately, the space they did give us wasn’t enough to satisfy either of our libidos. “Maybe we should look into that.”
He paused, his slick fingers nudging my hole. “What? Are you serious?”
“Yes.” I laughed at the absurdity of having this conversation when he was about to prep me. “On the clan lands, obviously, but maybe where no one can hear us.”
Evan cleared his throat. “I love you so much, Reid.”
