“Why me?” The words slipped out before I could rethink it. Saying it made me sound sadly insecure, but I had to know.
Willa gave me a sad smile. “I trust you. And I know that’s ironic, because now you don’t trust me. This gig is important to me, and I know you won’t try to take it too far or make me look stupid.”
At least she didn’t say she was secretly attracted to me, because that would be an obvious lie. There was one thing I wanted though.
“My brother’s wedding is in two weeks. If I do this, you have to come as my date.”
“It’s too early. Alan said the relationship was supposed to start after filming began.”
I stared her down, knowing she had the power to make it happen if I stood firm. I would not go to a wedding with someone picked out by my mother. And I knew if I tried to go alone she’d find a way around that. “It will be low key. We’ll tell everyone there we’re friends. Then, when the relationship rumors start, they’ll dig up photos from the wedding. They’ll think it’s romantic.”
She knew I was right, but as was her nature, she didn’t like having to cave on something. It was a form of weakness.
She wiped a finger down her orange juice glass, cutting through the condensation. “Fine, I’ll go.”
