“Smells delicious.”

“Well, I’m sure you could come up with something a lot better, but I figured I’d let you rest while I cooked.”

See? Perfect.

“Did you sleep well?”

It took her a second to realize he’d asked her a question. “Uh, yeah. I did.” She wasn’t about to share her dreams with him...the good or the bad. “What about you?”

“Great.”

She rolled her eyes. “You slept on the couch, Trevor. I’m sure it wasn’t great.”

His shoulders shook with a silent laughter. “Okay, so maybe it wasn’tgreat. But it wasn’t too bad. Trust me”—he grinned from over his shoulder—“I’ve slept on much worse.”

Lexi opened her mouth to tell him they could share the bed tonight but stopped herself before she could make such an enormous blunder.

Of course, they wouldn’t be sharing a bed tonight. She’d be back at her place, where she belonged.

Ignoring the pang of disappointment that thought created, Lexi grabbed a piece of crisp bacon from the plate sitting next to her. Trevor turned the burner off and slid the pan to one that was cool before facing her, right as she took a bite.

“Hey!” He pretended to chastise her. “You can’t have that until breakfast is ready.”

Lexi tilted her head to the side and eyed the cooling pan. “Looks done to me.”

With a smirk, he came closer. Stopping directly in front of her, he wrapped his fingers gently around her wrist and brought the piece of bacon she was holding to his mouth.

“You could have gotten your own piece, you know.” She glanced at the plate. “You made enough for an army.”

“I know.” He swallowed his bite and grinned.

She loved this playful side of him. Last night, he’d acted as if he were walking on eggshells. This morning, he was acting more like the Trevor she’d come to know from his many visits to the diner.

His eyes remained glued to hers and soon, all traces of teasing were gone. In a low, sexy rumble, he surprised her by saying, “God, angel. You’re so beautiful.”

His words left her nearly speechless, but she managed to ask, “Why do you call me that?”

A corner of his delectable mouth turned up. “That’s what you reminded me of the first time I saw you.”

Lexi considered this for a moment. “The first time you saw me was at the diner. You came in with Derek and another man.”

“Coop,” Trevor offered.

“It was afternoon. The dinner rush had just started, and I’d been working all day.”

Now, both corners of his mouth rose. “Glad to see that day stuck in your mind, too.”

She let out a very unattractive half-laugh, half-snort. “That’s because after having already worked nearly nine hours, I smelled like fried food, my hair was falling out of its bun, and I had zero makeup left on my face.” She shook her head. “I was a complete mess. Then, you walked in looking like sex on a stick, and I wanted to crawl into a hole somewhere.”

Trevor looked as though he wanted to laugh, but instead, he sounded sincere when he said, “That’s not how I remember it.”

“Oh, really? And how, exactly, do you remember it?”

He stepped closer, his thighs touching her bare knees.

“I remember walking through that door, seeing you, and completely losing my ability to breathe. That’s never happened to me before, but with you...it did. Messy bun and all.” In a sweet gesture she was quickly growing to love, he tucked a curl behind her ear.

Okay, now she reallywasspeechless. Not a single, funny quip or smart-ass comment came to mind. Her only thought was how much she wanted to kiss him again.
