“When are you free?” he shot back.

“Um...” She thought for a moment. “I close the next three nights, so I won’t be able to go for a few days. Unless you like to eat late, that is.”

“Late works for me.”

“Oh,” Lexi laughed. “I was just kidding about that.”

“I wasn’t.” He actually sounded serious.

“Really, Trevor. It’s okay. The diner closes at eight on weeknights, which isn’t horribly late, but I’d have to come home and shower and change. It would be nine o’clock before we could even go anywhere. Everything will probably be closed by then.”

Without any hesitation, he asked, “Do you like Mexican?”

“Uh...sure. Who doesn’t?”

“Good. There’s a great little place over on Jefferson. Not too fancy, but the food is excellent. I know the owner and his wife pretty well, so, I’m sure it’ll be fine if we’re a little late getting there.”

“Seriously, Trevor. You don’t have to—”

“Are you reneging on our deal?” He sounded hurt.

“What? N-no. Not at all. I just don’t want you to feel rushed during dinner, that’s all.”

“Relax, Lex.” There was humor in his voice. “I was just kidding. How about I pick you up tomorrow night at nine? Or we can meet at the restaurant, if that makes you feel more comfortable.”

God, he was sweet. “No. You can pick me up here. I’ll text you the address.”

“Then, it’s a date.”

“It’s a date.” Lexi was contain her smile.

“Well, then...I’d better get off here and let you get some rest.”

“Okay.”

“Don’t forget to text me your address.”

“I won’t.”

“Goodnight, angel. Sleep tight.”

“Goodnight.” With that, she ended the call. She laid her phone on top of her radio-slash-alarm clock-slash wireless charger and turned off her bedside lamp.

Lexi fell asleep with a smile on her face, completely unaware that someone had followed her home from the diner.

A man who had stood on the ground below her bedroom window as she’d talked with Trevor. The same man who was currently watching her house as she slept.
