Hi, Trevor. This is Lexi. Sorry to bother you so late, but I wanted to let you know I made it home safe and sound. I also wanted to thank you again for today. Have a good rest of your night.

Before she could talk herself out of it, she hit send, then set the phone and card back down next to her tablet. She’d just repositioned her pillow and started to lie down when her phone dinged, notifying her she had a new text.

Oh, shit.Had he just responded? Holding her breath, she sat back up and quickly grabbed her phone. Sure enough, there was a new text from the same number.

Hey, angel. No bother. And I already told you...there’s no need to thank me. That guy was a jerk and needed to learn he shouldn’t treat a lady like that. Hope the rest of your day went smoother?

Her heart did a little flip at his use of the word ‘angel’, the way it had when he’d called her that at the diner today. She wrote back.

It did. What about yours? Did you have a good day?

She waited. Seconds later, her phone dinged again.

I did. Spent the afternoon at the office, went to the gym, then came home. Nothing too exciting.

Almost immediately after receiving that text, she got another.

Can I call you?

Lexi’s heart gave a hard thump. Having a conversation while in the middle of a crowded diner was one thing. Talking to him over the phone, however, seemed...different. More intimate.

Because it is.

Lexi shook her head at herself. This was silly. Trevor was just being nice. Nothing he’d said so far indicated he wanted to be anything more than friends. And friends talked to each other on the phone all the time, so this was no big deal.

Except, in the diner, she could have sworn he’d been on the verge of asking her out. Something about the way he’d been looking at her...just before Caleb dropped a tray and broke two dishes, essentially ruining the moment.

Her phone dinged again.

You still there?

Crap. She hadn’t answered his question.

Yeah, I’m still here. And yes, you can call.

Butterflies danced in her stomach, and she nervously tapped her thumb against the edge of her phone as she waited. Four seconds later, it rang. Swallowing her nerves, Lexi slid the same thumb across her screen and answered the call.

“Hi.”

“Hey.” His deep voice rumbled. “I hope this is okay. I needed to ask you something, and I felt lame doing it through text.”

Lexi could’ve sworn he sounded almost as nervous as she was. That didn’t seem right, though. A guy like him wouldn’t get nervous simply over talking toher.

“You’re fine,” she assured him. “You can call me anytime.”

She regretted the words as soon as the invitation was out of her mouth. Not because she hadn’t meant them, but because she was afraid they made her sound desperate.

She could almost hear his smile when he said, “Good to know.”

After a few seconds of awkward silence, Lexi bit the bullet. “You said you wanted to ask me something?”

“I do.” She heard him inhale, and then, “I was wondering if you’d like to have dinner with me.”

Her inner teenager wanted to squeal. Luckily, she kept it on a tight leash. “Yeah. Sure. I’d love to go out with you.”

“You would? That’s great!” Trevor sounded relieved, which put her more at ease.

“When would you like to go?”
