Chapter 3
––––––––
Trevor looked at theclock. It was already seven thirty, and he was running late.
The day started off great. He’d met the rest of Alpha Team at Jake’s private shooting range on his ranch outside the city. They destroyed a few targets, got cleaned up, and went into the office.
For the next three hours, Trevor sat through two very long meetings with some potential clients.
With the others busy with their own tasks, Trevor then spent the remainder of the day in Jake’s office, ready to attack the rest of his to-do list. His intentions of getting it all done early were shot to hell within the first two hours of sitting down.
After nearly forty-five minutes on the phone with the bank, he’d finally managed to straighten up a payroll issue. Trevor then spent the next hour returning half a dozen emails and twice as many phone calls.
The last one took the longest. It was with Jason Ryker, R.I.S.C.’s Homeland handler. He’d called to talk to Trevor about an upcoming job that was going to require Alpha Team’s assistance.
He had no idea how Jake did this part of the job on a regular basis. The guy seriously needed to hire an office manager.
When it was all said and done, he realized he barely had enough time to rush home, take a quick shower, and head to Lexi’s house to pick her up for dinner.
Grabbing his jacket from the back of the chair, Trevor stood and pulled his phone from his pocket. He needed to text Lexi to let her know he may be a couple minutes late.
With his head down and his thumbs flying across his phone screen, Trevor exited Jake’s office at the same time one of his teammates was passing by.
“Whoa.” Sean “Coop” Cooper quickly stepped to the side to avoid the near hallway collision. His brown eyebrows rose in surprise. “Easy, man. Where’s the fire?”
“Sorry,” Trevor offered as he stopped just in time. “I didn’t see you.”
“Clearly.” Coop smirked sarcastically. “What’s the deal? You got a hot date, or something?”
“As a matter of fact, yes. I do.”
No sense in lying. If things went as well as he hoped, these guys would be getting to know Lexi soon enough, anyway.
“Well, hot damn. It’s about fuckin’ time.”
Both men turned to see Derek coming out of his office at the end of the hallway. Ignoring him, Trevor rolled his eyes and headed toward the office’s reception area.
“Wait up.” Coop took a couple extra steps to catch up to him. “So, who’s the lucky girl?”
He heard D answer for him. “The blonde I told you about.”
“The one from that diner?” Coop asked.
Trevor quickened his pace, bringing himself a few steps ahead of Coop. As he reached the office door, he hollered over his shoulder.
“Glad to see you two have nothing better to do than talk about my love life. Be sure to lock everything up before you leave.”
