“It’s part of the job,” Uriel answered.
Uriel didn’t want to say anything to Khray, but he was questioning a few things and wanted to check things out first. Until he had all of his facts straight, he was going to keep investigating.
“I want to ask you something, and you don’t have to answer me if you don’t want to,” Khray said.
“Okay, I’m listening.” Uriel pulled up to Abandon's underground garage and found a spot. He turned off the car and turned to look at Khray.
“How does your lover feel about your job? I'm guessing you've been in compromising positions, right?”
“He feels nothing, because there isn’t one.” Uriel smiled sadly.
“Oh.” Khray’s eyes widened. “But I thought…”
“I might not have a lover, but there are other people in my life who care about me, but they are fine with what I do. Any more questions?”
“No,” he responded. “I think I’ve pried into your personal life far more than I should have.”
Uriel nodded and got out of the car. He grabbed his hat and glasses but didn’t put them on, since Blue Lennox frequented the offices in Abandon and shouldn’t need a disguise. He reached into the back seat and grabbed the extra coffees and treats he’d bought for the rest of the team. They walked to the elevator, and before they got on, Khray stopped him.
“Wait, there’s something I forgot to tell you.”
“What is it?”
“You already know that the head of Abandon is Azazel King, however, the president is Jason Dagon and is a very hard person to please, but he seems to have a small soft spot for Blue, so whatever you do, please don’t fuck it up.”
Uriel mentally cursed at hearing the name Dagon and realized his day was about to get a lot worse.
How the fuck can I be nice to the man who I've hated for over twenty years?
Uriel’s wrists burned, trying not to think about being on the receiving end of Gadriel's torture, but as much pain as he received over those years, it was Dagon’s eyes that seemed to pierce into him like a knife, leaving behind unseen scars. Uriel could always tolerate Gadriel's demented ways, but it was the way Dagon looked at him with delight as he bled and screamed in pain that unnerved him.
Uriel wasn't sure why they were helping Dio. In his time with Azazel, Uriel crossed paths with the two dark angels, though it was with words and not swords. Azazel had taken Uriel's side in a few of his arguments with Gadriel and Dagon and even reprimanded them when they went too far with their insults.
Dagon was handsome and very easy on the eyes. He was charismatic and made anyone want to be his willing love slave, but if anyone examined Dagon closely, they would notice that his eyes spoke the truth of who he was.
Uriel had a thing about eyes, or as Synder would call it, an ability to read the souls of anyone he came across. He never saw it that way, but Uriel liked looking a person in the eyes to determine their truth. He'd learned his lesson after years of not looking Dio in the eyes to see his true intentions. Or Azazel; he'd been foolish to believe the man's words of love and forever after.
Between Dio, Azazel, and Dagon, Uriel couldn't tell which one of them was worse. They all hid behind a mask while they manipulated others with their genial actions. Uriel could only guess what Azazel and Dagon were up to now that they had a market in the entertainment world.
He looked at Khray then back at the elevator, when a horrifying thought came to him. “When you say soft spot for Blue, please don’t tell me you allow him to sleep…”
“Stop right there,” Khray growled. “Blue and I are committed to each other, and as much as I love him, I won’t keep someone by my side if they have feelings for someone else.”
“Oh,” Uriel said.
“I meant: play nice. No arguing and doing something foolish to piss him off. It's almost time for Blue to renegotiate his contract, and there are a few things he wants that only Jason Dagon can get him.”
“I can play nice,” he said, stepping on the elevator, and hoped that he could keep his cool composure. “So stop worrying.
“I have a right to be worried, especially after the way you spoke to Mister King.”
“Look, I've been doing well so far, and no one suspects that I'm not Blue Lennox. You need to talk to me and treat me the same way you do Blue. I know you haven't been with me for the past two months, but relax and let me work. If you’re second-guessing everything I do, then we’ll be found out. Also, next time don’t wait until it’s too late to tell me about the people Blue interacts with. I told you to give me a detailed list.”
“You’re right.” Khray took a deep breath and stood beside him in the elevator. “I’ll try not to worry.”
“I get that you’re nervous, but I’ve been doing this for over ten years. So I know what I’m doing. Just trust me.”
Khray nodded after a few seconds, then pressed the button to the floor they were going to. Uriel understood his worry. He was a bit nervous himself. In the last year, he hadn’t taken on any celebrity body-double jobs, mainly sticking to executives and other jobs out of town. He had pretended that Azazel and his loyal devils had set roots in Valleywood, and now it seemed he was going to be seeing them everywhere.
