Then why didn’t you tell him?

Alistaire knew he loved Fox, but he never got the chance to fall in love with him. For two years, he’d mourned not only the man he cared about but also what they’d never had together. He held onto the hope that if they had been given more time together, their love and bond would please all the deities.

Alistaire reached over and opened his nightstand drawer, and pulled out the dog tags, holding them next to the ring. He was looking at his past and future and knew there wasn’t anything to compare. In his heart, he would always care for Fox Morgan, but Crevan “Fox” Hannigan was his future.

They’d slowly grow old together and watch their children and grandchildren grow. They’d build a tighter bond not even the deities could break. Kissing the dog tags one last time, Alistaire stood and walked over to the closet. He pulled out a box filled with a few things he’d collected over the years and placed the dog tags inside, closing it.

“Goodbye, Fox Morgan.”

Putting the box back, Alistaire walked out of the bedroom with his mind made up to go after his mate. He put Crevan’s ring in his pocket, determined to put it back on his finger and make sure it stayed there. He grabbed his coat and shrugged it on when his cellphone rang.

“Crevan, baby. Where are you?” Alistaire answered without looking at the screen.

“Alistaire, it’s me.”

“LaMarkus, what’s up? Is it Gillies? Have you found him?”

“No,” LaMarkus sighed. “It’s Fox. He’s in the hospital.” Alistaire was already running out of the house the second his uncle had said his mate’s name. “He was in an accident. He’s alive but in a coma.”

“I’m on my way.”

Alistaire’s chest started to hurt at the thought of losing another mate. He knew he shouldn’t have let Crevan leave when he was so upset. He should have stopped him so they could talk like adults instead of yelling like children. He knew Crevan had a heart problem, but according to his mate, everything was fine.

If you’re okay, what the hell happened?

Alistaire took a deep breath to calm his thoughts while driving as if a demon was on his ass.

“I’m coming, baby. Don’t leave me. I need you so damn much.”

Alistaire got to the hospital in record time and was directed to Crevan’s room. He entered the room, moving over the bed, and sat on the edge. Picking up Crevan’s hand, he brought it to his lips, closing his eyes at the warmth he felt.

He’s still alive.

A tear streaked down his face as he opened his eyes to look at his mate, wishing the man was looking back at him. Alistaire brushed a hand over his soft blond curls, trailing his fingers over his delicate face. He’d been so wrong from the beginning. Fox Hannigan wasn’t anything like his first love.

“You have to wake up, Fox.” He pressed his forehead against Fox’s chest. “Baby, I’m so sorry I hurt you. You have to come back to me.” Alistaire raised his head and kissed his mate on his lips. “You can’t leave me alone. You can’t leave our daughters alone. They need you. You’re the only one Ava listens to, and you have to be there when Genesis takes her first steps and says her first words. Eternity would be too lonely without you beside me. Come back to me, Fox Hannigan.”

Alistaire sat up, took Fox’s ring out of his pocket, and placed it on Fox’s finger. “I didn’t hesitate, baby. You are the one I want to spend the rest of my life with.” He held onto his mate’s hand, praying to the gods to let him wake up.

Alistaire turned when he heard the hospital door open and Aria, Barret, and the rest of the Hannigans rushed through the door.

“What happened?” Aria asked, hurrying over to the other side of the bed. “Was it his heart? What did the doctor say?”

“I don’t know,” Alistaire told her. “I just got here.”

“You mean he wasn’t at home?” Zev asked.

“No. We got into an argument, and he rushed out of the house.”

Alistaire had been in such a hurry to get to the hospital he’d forgotten about Ava and Genesis. It was only his luck that both girls were with Moressa and Corbin.

“What did you fight about?” Zev asked.

“Nothing for you to know,” Alistaire told the other man. Whatever happened between him and his mate was no one else’s business.

“It must have been bad since it affected his heart,” Zev yelled.

“His heart is fine.” Everyone turned when they heard a new voice enter the room.
