“Doctor David, what do you mean his heart is fine?” Aria asked.
“Medically, it’s in perfect shape—as if there wasn’t anything wrong with it,” the doctor answered. “I think what’s happening has something to do with his magic.”
“But our family isn’t magical,” Barret said to the doctor.
“You live in a town filled with magic. Sooner or later, some of it will seep into you. Lately, the town’s magic has been growing, and I don’t see it slowing down anytime soon.”
“And that affects Fox how?” Alistaire asked.
“Seeing what is happening right now, I can only assume my research is correct. I took a scan of his heart a few weeks ago, and the hole was almost closed. I took another when he was brought in today, and it showed a perfectly functioning heart.”
“Do you think he’s becoming magical?” Alistaire asked. “Did Fox know his heart was healed?”
“No, I wanted to be sure so I told him to continue doing what he’s been doing lately. As for the other thing, I think he’s always had some kind of magical abilities within him. What those abilities could be? I don’t know. But it’s so great that even his heart couldn’t handle the pressure,” Doctor David explained. “I believe what is happening now is that Fox is trying to heal himself magically. Whatever happened today caused the magic to react and it is trying to protect his heart.”
“So you kept something important from him? What the fuck kind of doctor are you?”
“One that cares deeply about his patient. I didn’t want to give him false hope, Captain Vale. I wanted to be sure he was healed before I said anything.”
As much as Alistaire wanted to punch the shit out of the doctor, the man seemed to genuinely care about Fox. Alistaire looked at Fox, wondering if he’d spoken up and told the man he loved him would everything have been all right. They would be celebrating the New Year with their family instead of him in the hospital.
“So what do we do?” Zev asked.
“Nothing. I’ll check back with him later.” Doctor David nodded then left the room.
Alistaire brushed his fingers across Fox’s cheek.I love you, my sly fox. You just need to wake up so you can hear me say it.
Chapter Seventeen
Fox sat up and looked around the beautiful garden, smiling. It had been ages since he’d been to the realm of in-between. When he was but a young godling, Fox and Nafri had spent hours playing amongst the flowers. The man might be his uncle, but he was just as childish as Fox.
“This place brings back memories.”
Fox turned his head to Nafri, who was sitting beside him. “It does. I didn’t think I’d ever see it again.”
“You can always return home.”
“I take it you didn’t lose my soul?”
“No, that part is true. I got to Fox Morgan a bit later than I was supposed to.”
Fox nodded. “How are my mother goddesses?”
“Busy as usual,” Nafri answered. “They send their love.”
“They haven’t forgiven me?” Fox whispered and looked down at his hands.
“You shattered your heart into pieces, Tokala. Or should I say Crevan? What do you expect? But you’re wrong—they have forgiven you.”
“They just don’t want to see me.” Fox looked at the large mansion sitting far away. “I’ll respect their wishes and wait until they are ready to see me.”
“They are just as stubborn as you are.”
“Crevan Hannigan has been reborn?”
“You know the answer,” Nafri told him.
“I hope he has a good life, better than the last.”
