“Okay. Well.” I gestured vaguely, trying to address the sudden elephant in the room. “What are you thinking, then?”
Reyes wiped his hands on a towel before stepping into my space, parting my legs so he could stand between them. His dark blue eyes were softer than I’d expected, his touch soothing. I realized he wasn’t as upset at all. Just… confused, maybe?
“I’m thinking you’re worth it,” he said.
I froze, completely thrown by his answer. “What?”
“The weight of your job doesn’t scare me, Jake, and it never will, okay?”
Wait a second. Never will?Did he think therewasa future for us? But what about his job, his career?
Rey kissed me once, but I was too stunned by his words to kiss him back.
“Rey, what are you saying? You… want this? Us?”
He ran his hands up my back, giving me a smile I couldn’t read. Maybe it meant he was just as conflicted about this as I was.
“All I’m saying is, you’re worth it. Anyone who tells you otherwise is a fool.”
