“He must be freaking out.” Mac mentally throttled his twin. Now he finally knew why Sawyer had called on Mac’s wolf to help him.

“Maybe…but I don’t think so…at least not anymore. The plan was for Sawyer to bring Alex back here where he would be protected.”

“That would work.”

“Yes, well, not gonna happen. After talking it over with me, Hunter sent a reply, telling Sawyer he’d call thismorning. But before he could, Sawyer sent him a message saying everything was fine.”

“What the hell does that mean? How can everything be fine? Wait, does the High Council know about Alex?”

Shrugging, Jackson said, “I guess so…his birth would be on file. Why?”

“After class one day, I was outside my professor’s office, waiting to see him when I overheard him shouting at someone. I didn’t intend to eavesdrop but he was so damned loud, there wasn’t any way to avoid it.”

“What does this have to do with Alex?”

“I’m getting to that. According to what I heard, someone was trying to recruit my professor to head up a medical unit within the High Council whose purpose is to examine and document any shifter with abnormalities.”

“Fuck! And Alex falls right into that category.”

“Yeah. It would have shown up when he was an infant so his doctor would have known.”

“Maybe it didn’t show up until much later,” Jackson mused.

“Not likely. According to the case study, it was apparent in the early partial shifts the infant did.”

“Well, either the doctor didn’t report it or Alex is not telling Sawyer the truth.”

“If a doctor didn’t report it, he could lose his license. I can’t imagine any reason a doctor would be willing to take that chance,” Mac said. “Alex must be lying to my brother.”

“I don’t believe he is,” Jackson replied. “Sawyer would have scented it. But I do think something’s not right. If what you say is true, why is Alex in LA. It doesn’t make sense. I think there’s more to Alex than either you or I know at this point.”

“Do you think Sawyer’s in danger?”

“Do you have a link with your brother?” asked Jackson.

“A mind link? No, but I can sense him at times. It usually happens when he’s in trouble…but not like you think. Once, when my twin was perched on top of a mountain, about to go hang-gliding, I could sense his excitement, and maybe his trepidation. It’s more like I’d pick up his feelings whenever he was in a high stress situation.”

“And now?”

Concentrating, Mac closed his eyes, focusing on his connection to his twin. Sensing nothing, he checked with his wolf, finding him dozing. Opening his eyes, Mac looked at Jackson. “I’m not picking up anything…my wolf is relaxed which he wouldn’t be if Sawyer’s wolf was in danger.”

“Then it’s safe to assume Alex is not a threat,” Jackson replied. “Hunter sent a message back to Sawyer, asking him to call him as soon as possible. When that happens, Hunt will conference me into the call so I can tell Sawyer why it’ll be better for his mate here…at least until we know they’re safe to be on their own. I want you on the call also, so you can assure your brother that Hunt and I haven’t been smoking loco weed.”

“Okay…anything else I can do?”

“Actually, yes. See what you can find out about dual shifters…but…”

“I know. Keep it on the down low.”

“Exactly. Also, speak with Ian and see if he can add anything.”

“Will do.”

“Good. Now, since you aren’t psychic, what did you want to talk about?” asked Jackson.

“Just an update on Aunt Hope. She complained about her hands shaking. I’m pretty sure it’s because of the months she was bed-ridden. Nothing serious though. Shifting should help and I will be shifting with her when she does. Just wanted to let you know.”

“Are you planning to go for a run with her?” asked Jackson.
