“Right…how are they doing?” asked Sawyer.

“Right now…good, but both pregnancies are high risk.”

“Yeah…uhm…Mac, we haven’t told anyone else yet, but Alex is pregnant…I know you said it can’t happen and you probably don’t believe me now…but trust me, he is. The reason I’m telling you is we want you to check him over, you know, to make sure everything’s okay.”

Mac remained silent for a moment, thinking over what his twin just said, then asked, “How did you find out?”

“It was confirmed by my wolf, Glenn’s tiger and Alex’s fox. I know it’s early but we’re heading to France and…”

“Say no more. I’ll be glad to do it but you know it’s too early for me to see anything on the ultrasound,” Mac said.

“Yeah, but I’d feel better if you gave him the all clear to travel,” Sawyer mumbled, feeling silly about his request.

“Hey, stop that shit,” Mac ordered. “You’re right to want Alex to see a doctor. It will give me a baseline, making it easier to spot any potential problems as the pregnancy progresses.”

Hearing the door to the motorhome open, Sawyer murmured, “Hey, gotta go…my mates are waiting for me.”

“Call me later,” Mac said.

“Sure…bye.” Turning off his phone, he quietly opened the bedroom door a sliver, smiling at the thought of surprising his mates. Peeking out to see where they were, he quickly shut the door, backing away from it.Shit! Shit! Shit!Instead of Glenn and Alex, there was a stranger rummaging around in the kitchen. From the faint scent that floated in, he knew the guy was a shifter…but why was he in here?

Think! Think! What to do? Hide! Yeah, hide!Sawyer’s eyes wildly searched the room for a place he could fit into, quickly coming to the conclusion whoever designed the interior never took into account a wolf shifter might need to fit inside the closet or under the bed. Then, a more alarming thought hit him…what if my mates finish and come here looking for me? Shit! What if there are more outside? Fuuuuck!

Then hearing the shifter open the first bedroom door, Sawyer realized it was only a matter of seconds before he’d be discovered, preventing him from warning his mates. There was only one solution. Uttering the wordsOracle taught him, he cloaked himself, praying to the gods to make it work.Shit! Should’ve tried this out before. Too late, now.Adopting an attack position as his bedroom door opened, Sawyer held his breath, as the shifter’s eyes scanned the room, passing over him without a pause.

Silently exhaling, Sawyer watched as the intruder turned around, heading back to the kitchen area. Following him, he was trying to figure out how to leave the motorhome without alerting him. Inching his way over to the exit, Sawyer froze when the man said one of his mates’ name.

“Nobody’s here.”

“I don’t give a shit what you saw…I’m telling you the place is empty. Ask one of them where their partner is.”

“Whatcha mean you can’t?”

Sawyer’s gut clenched. What did they do to my mates that’s preventing them from answering?Fighting back the panic filling him, he forced himself to remain calm, knowing his mates’ lives depended on him to do just that.

“I’m heading back,” the shifter growled. “No, don’t do a fucking thing. I’ll handle it.” Ending the call, he muttered, “Those fucking assholes…can’t do anything right.” Sniffing the air, he scented nothing but faint traces of the man he was hunting. Giving one more glance around before leaving, he stepped outside, slamming the door behind him.

Sawyer remained where he was, giving the shifter time to leave his campsite before he exited. But waiting was painful; his fear of what was happening to his mates ran through his mind. All he knew for certain was one of them couldn’t talk, but which one? That was the questionhe desperately needed an answer to.And that leads to the question of what happened to my other mate?

Unwilling to even contemplate possibilities, Sawyer did what he was so good at when learning a new sport…focusing on the task at hand and ignoring everything else. What’s first?Analyzing the situation, he concluded rescuing his mates fell to him alone, since everyone else who could help were too far away. Even if he called Riley, it would take Ghost and Smokey at least forty-five minutes to get to his location.Nope…too long. His wolf was now frantic, warning of the danger his mates were in.

It was time to act. Sawyer headed to a window, carefully peering through the blinds to see if the shifter had gone. Calling upon the other part of his gift, Sawyer’s gaze cut through the thick fog and darkness as if they didn’t exist; the shifter was walking away from the motorhome and toward Alex’s campsite.

Smiling grimly, Sawyer slipped out the door, fading into the forest as he took a short cut to his mate’s campsite, using his penetrating vision to avoid stumbling on any fallen branches that might alert the men who were holding them captive.

Chapter 44

Slowing down as he approached Alex’s campsite, Sawyer spotted several men warming themselves at a campfire near his mate’s SUV. Unable to hear what they were saying, he cautiously advanced toward them, skirting the camping gear strewn on the ground. From the looks of it, his mates tried to fight off their assailants but Sawyer guessed they were overpowered. Pausing for a moment, he scanned the campsite, fighting back the panic rising in his gut when he couldn’t see his mates. Continuing on, he was finally close enough to hear what was being discussed.

“I don’t like it…I can’t see shit in this fog,” one man growled.

“Shoulda picked another night. Makes me think the boss is a little nuts.”

“You better not let him hear you…if you value your life,” a muscled man snapped, flicking his cigarette butt into the fire. “He’ll be here any minute so shut the fuck up.”

A shiver ran through Sawyer’s body at the mention of the intruder who’d been in his motorhome. Backing away from the men, he considered his next step; saving his mates topped the list. Thankful for his penetrating vision, Sawyer began walking around the trailer and vehicles, trying to find his mates. They’re not here so they must be inside one of the cars or Alex’s trailer or somewhere nearby. But where?

Whatever the reason for the attack, one thing was clear to Sawyer…the leader wanted all three of them. Since they couldn’t find him because he was cloaked, he was betting they wouldn’t be in a hurry to leave. Instead, the man they called ‘boss’ was probably intending to force one of his mates to reveal Sawyer’s location. If I’m right, the window of opportunity to save my mates is fast closing.
