Since it was impossible to search the vehicles or trailer, Sawyer headed into the forest surrounding the campsite, scenting the air as he went, mentally laying out a grid in his head. Then he began doing a methodical sweep while keeping an eye on the men.
When his searched failed to turn up either of his mates, Sawyer widened his circle, picking up the pace. The motherfucker who was looking for me will be here any minute. Move, Sawyer, move!
On his third pass, he found his mates, unconscious and tied up, their bodies dumped in a heap on the forest floor. The back of the trailer blocked the men’s view of his mates, making it easy to cloak both of them without anyone noticing. Untying Glenn, Sawyer hefted him over his shoulders in a fireman’s carry, moving him fifty yards away, gently setting him down behind several thick bushes. Hightailing back to Alex, Sawyer untied him, threw him over his shoulder and then began running toward the far side of the campground.
Stopping when he reached the trash bins, Sawyer hoped the stink would keep the other men from searching there. Squeezing behind them, he carefully propped Alex against the back of a dumpster before heading back to get Glenn. If I can save my mates, I owe the Fates big time for giving me the perfect gift to keep these sons-of-bitches away.Silently, he thanked them, but just to make sure they got his message, he decided to tell Oracle to pass it on when he saw her again.
Arriving back at Alex’s campsite, Sawyer saw the man, who the others called their boss talking while gesturing angrily to his men. Veering off, he moved swiftly to get to Glenn, who was still unconscious, hefting him up and heading back for the bins.
Picking up the pace when he heard shouts, Sawyer knew they had found their captives gone. Suddenly, Glenn groaned as he began to struggle against Sawyer’s arms that were holding him in place. “It’s okay…I got ya.”
Grunting, Glenn quieted down, trying to remember what happened and why he was being carried by Sawyer through the woods. Closing his eyes, he fought the dizziness caused by his head bouncing as his mate continued moving. When a branch brushed against the back of his head, the pain forced him to moan, and his memories of what happened rushed into his consciousness.Alex!“Where’s Alex?” he asked, his voice low and filled with pain.
“He’s safe,” Sawyer uttered softly. “We’re almost there. Glad to see you’re awake. Do you remember what happened to you two?”
“Yeah…where are they?”
“You mean the men who knocked you out and tied you up?” Sawyer asked. “Probably scouring the campgrounds, trying to figure out how two bound and unconscious prisoners escaped.”
“Put me down…I can walk.”
“I know you can, but that ain’t gonna happen right now,” Sawyer muttered. “You’re as weak as a kitten, so save your strength, tiger mate. Plus, we’re almost there so just fucking be patient.”
Frustrated and angry, Glenn wanted nothing more than to find the fuckers who were responsible for hurting Alex, but Sawyer made a good point. He wasn’t in any shape right now to kill them, much less fight them. Finally, his mate’s movement stopped and Glenn felt himself being lowered carefully onto the ground. Straightening up, he felt his knees buckle, quickly grabbing Sawyer’s shoulders in an effort to keep upright.
“Easy,” Sawyer murmured.
Looking around, Glenn now realized where the stench of rotting food was coming from. Giving a mirthless chuckle at the place his mate had selected, some of his fear for Alex eased. “Nice. Where’s Alex?”
“I figured it would be the last place they’d check,” Sawyer murmured. “He’s behind those dumpsters right now…I’m guessing still unconscious.”
“Did you see who attacked us?” asked Glenn, gingerly feeling the bump on the back of his head.
“Yeah…but I never saw them before. The leader…they call him the boss…he came after me…mentioned your name. Once he left, I headed over to warn you, but it was too late. What happened?”
“They came out of nowhere, jumped us while we were hitching up the trailer. I don’t know what they used to hit us, but I saw Alex crumple just before I blacked out.”
“Motherfuckers!”
“Yup, can’t disagree with you on that. Let’s go check on our mate.”
Once he was sure Glenn was steady on his feet, Sawyer led him to Alex who was still out, just as he suspected. Gently lifting his mate up, he slowly backed up until theywere in the clear. Then setting him on the ground, Sawyer felt for the bump on Alex’s head. Anger surged through him when he found it, his wolf clawing to get out. But Sawyer pushed his animal back, knowing it would be an unfair match since there were four against one. Consoling his wolf, he promised him justice would soon prevail.
Checking Alex’s vitals the way Mac had taught him, Sawyer concluded his mate probably had only a mild concussion, if that, and thankfully nothing more serious. But that wasn’t going to save those assholes. It was time to execute his plan, the one he formulated while carrying his mates through the woods. Now, since Glenn was awake, it would make it easier to carry out. Turning to Glenn, he said, “I cloaked both of you…”
“Are you cloaked?” asked Glenn.
“Yeah, I did it after I found the asshole searching my motorhome.”
“But I can still see you…how’s that possible?”
“I dunno…I see you and Alex too, even though you both are cloaked,” Sawyer muttered. “Something to ask Oracle later. But I know the shifter who came after me couldn’t see me…and I don’t think he could scent me either.”
“I removed our scents when I dropped you off…thought it would be better so if the guy came back, he wouldn’t know we were here.”
“Ahh…good thinking,” Sawyer said, grinning. Then, he shared his plan with Glenn. “As I said, you guys can’t be seen so you’ll be safe here behind the dumpsters…”
“Where are you going to be?”
