CHAPTER 16

The first few weeks passed quickly. By now, we had established our own routine. The good morning call, the messages during the day and the evening video call until we collapsed. And often and willingly, it was he who watched me fall sleep.
I was starting to feel more tired every day, I started taking vitamins so I could get to the end of the day without problems.
He’s always on time“Hello, love. You won't be a minute late. “
“I can't, I miss you baby. At least I can see you.”
“Look, I'm not complaining. How was your day?”
“Well, stressful but it's over. You said you had news. And I'm curious, you know that.”
“Yes, I know, love. Then I have two... actually three important news.”
“Okay…???”
I show him a folder.“Since this morning, I am officially and legally a free woman. The judge signed the divorce documents.”
“No, you are not free. You belong to me!”he says with a smile.“That was quick. Does it take so little in Italy?”
“Absolutely not, at least 3 months. But I knew the judge.”
“It's wonderful news. And then?”asks curious
“They accepted the offer for the house,”I say enthusiastically.
“Love this, its great news. I can't believe it, we can finally start shaping our future.”I see him smile, he is excited and I understand him. Everything is finally taking shape. They are no longer fantasies or just ideas.
“I will go there in two days. I'll take you on a tour of the entire property. And then...”I pause, creating suspense.
“And then?”he echoes me.
“I called Nellie, she is very sweet. We will meet for a coffee tomorrow and afterward we will pick up Angel from school. I bought her a gift and I'm sorry I didn't ask you for an opinion, but I saw it today and I fell in love with it.” Silence. I look at the screen and see Logan moved. “Is everything alright?”
“You have no idea how happy you made me right now. I love you so much that I feel my heart is about to explode with happiness. I cannot imagine how happy Angel will be.”
“She still doesn't know. I asked Nellie to surprise her and she said yes.”I wash my hands and go to get the envelope with the gift. “Here it is. It is a simple necklace with an angel. You said she's your guardian angel so she deserves it.” He wipes a tear. He is excited. Meanwhile, I sit at the table and start eating the salad even if my stomach closes halfway through the meal and I leave it there.
“So, tomorrow you're leaving for Chicago and then Aspen?”
“No, actually I'm leaving in 4 hours, so I'm in Chicago in the late morning and I have plenty of time to talk to Nellie.”
“Go rest, you seem tired, love,”he says and I really am but I don't want to admit it.
“It's just your impression. I'm fine.”I don't have time to say this as a wave of nausea hits me and I run to the bathroom.
“Kate! Are you okay?”I get out of the bathroom a little messy“All right, I shouldn't have put the apple in the salad. I knew it would make me sick.”
“Love, go lie down and get something for the stomach ache. I'll let you rest.”I don't reply. I want to lie down. This heat is exhausting for me.“Thank you, love, I keep you updated on the trip.”
“I love you baby, good night.”
