SARAH

“Sarah? Sarah?” I can barely hear Rage’s voice coming from the earpiece.

“Yes,” I whisper.

“All right. Look inside the bag, there’s a pocket on the left side. Inside you will find two EpiPens,” he says. “Take one, fast. Don’t think about it, just do it.”

I find the EpiPens, grab one and stab myself with it. The guy on the other side of the door keeps trying to get in.

The door burst open, and I see a man standing in front of me.

Rage

“Cass, baby, what is it? Let me help you,” the fucker says, and I hear the door closing. I stand up and start to pace like a madman. This is fucked up.

Sarah aggressively gasps for air.

Yes, the adrenaline kicked in.I lean forward and put my hands on the table.

“Listen to me,” I start talking, “that boost of energy is not going to last forever. You need to neutralize him.”

“What the fuck?” the stranger yells, then a loud thud comes through the speakers. “How are you still moving?” He sounds confused as all hell.

“Leave me the fuck alone!” Sarah yells.

All we hear is loud thumps and then nothing.

Carter and I look at each other in silence, waiting for a sound, anything.

“Sarah?” Carter anxiously asks. “Sarah? Are you still there?”

Come on, kiddo.

Carter looks at me waiting for instructions, but then…

“I-I’m here.” Her voice trembles, and all my tension leaves my body.

Fuck, I’m so happy to hear her voice.

“Good girl,” I reply almost immediately. “Are you okay?”

“Yes, my body feels heavy.” She sounds tired as well.

“That’s the adrenaline fading away. What happened?” I ask. We need to keep her focused.

“I knocked him out,” she confesses, and Carter laughs.

He’s perplexed, but he doesn’t ask for more details. This is only the beginning.

“Good, now grab your gear, lock him in and get as far away from there as you possibly can.”

We both sit again, thrilled by the outcome.

“Give me a minute. I can barely stand straight,” she says.
