I can picture her, confused and agitated.
“You only have a few more minutes before the other asshole realizes something is up.” I need her to move on before it’s too late.
“What if I exit this bathroom and he sees me? Would he recognize me?”
“Probably. That’s why we’ve come prepared.”
“We have?”
Oh girl, you don’t know how thorough I can be.
“Yes. Reach inside your bag again. There’s a wig, a cap and a T-shirt. Put them on, and get out of there.”
“Roger,” she acknowledges. “This shit sucks, by the way.”
“We know, Snow White, we know,” Carter states, “but it is what it is, and you have to move, now.”
“You two are agreeing way more often than before… Are you two dating?”
“Ha-ha hilarious,” Carter babbles with mocking a laugh.
“Yeah, very funny, kiddo,” I add with a smile.
The old Sarah is back, and we’re glad she’s made it. For now.
Chapter Twenty-One
SARAH
I step out of the bathroom and speedily close the door behind me. I look around, trying to find suspicious faces, but nothing seems out of place. In fact, it’s too calm. How come no one saw what just happened to me?
“Okay, I’m out. The door is closed,” I whisper over the radio.
“What took you so long?” Carter asks.
“The guy is still unconscious, and I needed to make sure that when someone finds him – because eventually, someone will – they believe he just passed out.” I walk along the train, scanning every face, alert of every sudden move around me.
“Okay, and?”
Oh my god, Carter is asking a lot of questions today.
“And, that’s why I let him there, sitting on the toilet with his pants down to his ankles, to make it believable.” The guy was heavy, and it took me a while, but I’m pleased with the result.
“Good thinking, kiddo,” Rage jumps in. “Remember, we still have to look out for John. We also don’t know if there are more on that train. So, reach inside the bag again and put on the cap I left in there along with the shades.”
I rummage inside the bag and quickly find both items. I put them on and confirm with a quick, “Done.”
The train starts to slow down. The brakes are squealing. We are coming to my stop, and many people are getting ready to step off.
Whatever they used to drug me, it’s strong. I am still dizzy and nauseous. I don’t want to think what would’ve happened if I didn’t use the EpiPen.Thank fuck for Rage.
“Hey, Rage?” I murmur.
“I’m here,” he whispers.
“Thanks.”
I watchedTakenlike a million times. How come didn’t I think this was a possibility? I feel naïve and unprepared for this adventure now. I need to remember everyone and everything is the enemy. And keep my eyes open all the time.
