Elijah

“You’rewhat?”

I grinned at the unadulterated shock and joy in the voices surrounding us. I’d accompanied Felix to work that day. It was technically his day off, but he couldn’t keep it to himself any longer, and wanted desperately to let his friends in on the news. The scent of coffee and warm pastries filled the air as we sat in the café booth.

The one with the high-pitched shriek was Skylar; the one with a slightly more monotone, but still upbeat voice was Kaden. The one with the most peppy, flamboyant voice was Sammy. Right now, all of them mixed as one as they talked over each other in excitement.

I knew Felix was beaming.

“Pregnant,” he repeated joyfully.

“Oh my god, Felix!” Skylar cried. “It’s like a miracle!”

“I thought you couldn’t have children?” Kaden asked. “What happened?”

“Well . . .” Felix looped his arm around mine and I smiled. “It turns out that it wasn’t me at all. It was probably my ex who was infertile, and he just blamed it on me.”

Skylar gasped. “Wait, are you talking about that lowlife scumbag who kicked you to the curb?”

“That’s the one.”

I almost laughed at the fury in Skylar’s voice. He sounded like he was ready to rip Larry limb from limb. He reminded me of a chihuahua trying to fight a rottweiler.

“Well, that’s karma for you,” Kaden added. His spoon clinked against his cup as he sassily stirred his coffee.

“Yeah, screw that guy, Felix!” Sammy chimed in. “Besides, your new alpha . . .”

I assumed he looked me up and down before he whistled.

Kaden chuckled. “I thought you were straight, Sammy. Don’t you have a girlfriend?”

“I am and I do. Doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate a nice man alpha when I see one.”

“Oh, that reminds me,” Felix piped up. “Sammy, you and your girlfriend Brooke. You’re the reason Elijah and I met.”

“We are?”

“Really?” I asked, putting my arm around his shoulder. “I don’t know this story. Tell me.”

Everyone quieted down and I felt Felix grow warm with embarrassment, but he continued anyway. “Well, when Larry kicked me out, all I had was some money for a hotel. I ran into Brooke and her service dog there. I actually didn’t know it was a service dog at first,” he added with a nervous laugh. “I thought it was a regular dog, so I asked if it was allowed to be there, and she explained it to me.”

I smiled. The idea of the Felix I knew asking Brooke such a clueless question seemed bizarre to me, considering how he and I met.

“Brooke has more patience than I do,” I teased. “I would’ve probably told you to get lost.”

Felix chuckled. “Well, I mean, I was loudly crying my eyes out all night, so she probably took it easy on me.”

“Fair enough.”

“So Brooke and Sammy put in a good word for me here at the Omega Angel Café, and that’s how I got the job,” Felix continued. “And then . . .”

“Me walking into the café on that particular day was just a cosmic coincidence, huh?” I remarked.

He kissed me on the cheek. “I guess so.”

“Aww!” Skylar cried. “You too are too much to handle, I can’t.”
